    Hey There,

I'm in 4th year, doing a project on what we think our future career will be. As you may have guessed, i've chosen engineering :P
Anyway, i was wondering why the points for Mechanical Engineering are much lower than points for other engineering?
(I think it's 360 in UCD, compared to 495 for "engineering omnibus")

I was wondering why this is?

Also, i was wondering how many people think Engineering is an "interesting" career? if so what do you like most about it?
    Thanks a lot,
    _Kar.

I am an electrical engineering student, so not anexpert yet!!!:p

But here is what I think:

The points for all engineering seem to have dropped. There are not enough of certain types of engineers at the moment it would seem. I think the demand for mechanical engineers has gone down recently, but I am open to correction.
i was wondering how many people think Engineering is an "interesting" career?
Well I do. I have never worked as an engineer, but I have worked with many experienced engineers from many disciplines during my years working as an electrician on large projects both here and abroad. I could see that I was only scratching the surface of something much more interesting.
if so what do you like most about it?
Interesting, challanging, oppertunity to travel, well paid, good conditions always learning. Lots of things!

Engineers Ireland are great for the type of information you are looking for. Google them and send them an email. It is inportant that you choose an area in engineeriing that will give you a job!

Good career opertunities in Mech in Ireland are not as plentiful

A lot of people I knew did this so they could transfer into chemical or civl

The first thing you have to remember is that the points for any course are dictated by demand for places, not course difficulty or anything else. The points for the omnibus entry are so much higher because way more people applied for this course, presumably bacause it gives the option to choose your speciality at the end of first year when you have a better idea of what its all about, rather than just choosing straight mech and not having that choice.

I will add here that yes there is a downturn in demand for Engineers in Ireland but as everything by the time you graduate, 6 years from now i am assuming, as a engineer you may find huge demand again in the country. 6 years is a long time, 6 years ago an engineer could pick and choose their job.
I will also say that outside of ireland demand is huge in certain sectors Ireland does not have, chemical, oil and gas sectors are crying out for all types of engineers.

And Yes, most intersesting job I have ever done!
