After a really awful day weatherwise the sky totally cleared this evening. I looked up into the sky and it was so beautiful, then I saw a shooting star and it made my night  I have to say the view from this planet is pretty fantastic. :)

Are shooting stars common? I look at the sky at night quite a bit, I live in rural land so no pesky lights ruining the awesome sky and tonight is the first one I've seen in years!

They're fairly common but no less spectacular to look at. What you probably saw is one of the Orionids - they're a meteor shower at this time of year. They hit their peak a couple of days ago but if you keep watching you'll still see a few.

The most spectacular are the Perseids in mid-august - they can peak at over 100 per hour.

It is heading towards mid-November, so even already you can start looking out for Leonids. That shower peaks on Monday November 17th, so they will be increasing during next week. Any time from now until even the final week of November should show more than usual amount of meteors. I saw a nice one myself a few nights ago.

About 5.30 today I saw what looked like a REALLY large and bright shooting star; looking north from Bunratty in Clare (looking towards Shannon/Ennis).

It was odd, because I love watching (and watching for) shooting stars but I've never seen one against a relatively bright sky before.....

Is this normal based on the Orionids and Leonids mentioned above ?
