    Hey,

I'm more of an interested reader around this part of boards but find some of the advice and discussions very interesting. Anyway I'm currently in the process of coming up with an idea for my thesis. Seeing as I'm doing a M.Acc I thought I'd focus my attention on the banking sector.

Specifically I'm looking to research whether or not the banking profession or government will need to establish a new code that is somewhat akin to SOX in the U.S in order to restore peoples' confidence within their ability to effectively manage liquidity and capital. Having met with my supervisor she seemed quite keen for me to push through on this area but told me that I'd need to narrow my field seeing as it's such a minefield at present.

I'm thinking of focusing in on lending criteria for residential and commercial loans but that it'll somewhat detract from my original idea which I'm not too keen on doing. If any of you have any suggestions to make I'd be very grateful no matter how small the suggestion is.

    Thanks in advance

I think you'd be as well starting to look at the original aim of Sarb-ox post-Enron which wanted to make balance sheets more transparent and how at this moment in time you would be hard pushed to find any investor that is confident in what is really on the balance sheet of any financial institution

Before you dive into this why not take a step back and think is this what you are really interested in?

Seeing as you are doing a MAcc there is a high chance you are moving onto a Big 4 firm. Are you going into financial services there? Why the banking sector? I know it's flavour of the month but are you really interested?

SOx? Are you really interested again? These regulations are the bain of many an accountants life.

My advice is to not pick a topic because you've heard about it non-stop in your course (SOx) particularly if you are not keen on it. Don't pick a topic that is flavour of the month (the banking sector) as you'll be the 50th person to do so in your year so why wouldn't you differentiate yourself and give your supervisor something different, they will be far more receptive.

Lending criteria sounds a bit on the dull side...although it could get you a good mark as the academics like boring beauracratic crap like that. Something more exciting would be to look the gambling practices of the investment arms of banks and how they played around with massive sums of money and invested them based on equations that left out key factors and criteria that could cause the disaster that we are facing today - Why banks should not do that, what they are really there to do...and what the procedures should be to stop that in the future....ie Sarkozys assertion of goverments buying stakes in the major banks to monitor etc.
getting info and papers on the recent practices might be difficult though but im sure there are guys writing about that kind of stuff right now. i reckon the nationalising of banks thing would do you good due to its topical nature right now and it will be in the news for a while
