Winter golf plans?

As my club (Lucan) will be reduced to an 11-hole track for the next ~6 months due to the the club agreeing to allow the Adamstown developer lay a pipe under the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fairways, and with no alternative golfing option in place, a group of us have decided to organise our own winter golf schedule.

We've arranged 9 rounds of the Monty course for €40 a head starting this Sunday. There are 24 of us playing and this will run right up to Dec 22nd.

I must say I'm really looking forward to keeping the 18 hole rounds going through the winter. If we get a mild winter, we may even get to play more golf over the next 9 weeks than was achieved during July & August!

So I was wondering, how much golf are you planning on playing over the coming months?

Hmm, only problem with not playing cos of the rain is that it seems to have rained non-stop since May 2007! I'd be practically giving up golf if i became a fair-weather golfer in this country.

I'll try and play on a Sunday as i did last year but i won't be worrying about scores or prizes or anything like that. Just want to work on a few things and keep the swing in shape.

By the way, that sounds like a cracking idea Madds! If you're ever short of numbers feel free to give me a PM!:D

    Not much.

I play soccer which is more suited to the irish winter I find.

When I was younger I played golf all year round quite a lot but since taking it back up last spring I've decided the break did me good and I'll be taking another short break from pretty much now.

Haven't hit a ball in 2 weeks since our last medal of the year.

I'll play the odd game I'm sure with my fam or whoever and might try win a turkey in the run up to christmas but that'll be it.

The rain and wind doesn't bother me so much as the cold. When you can't feel your hands it's just no fun. The course being mucky, placing and the lack of any real competition just doesn't interest me as much.

I expect by giving it a rest I'll rebuild enthusiasm for the new year. No change to clubs required and no major swing changes but I'll get back working on things with my pro in Feb/March. Wedges and putting is where I really want to improve in the pre season.

It usually takes a couple of weeks for me to see results from a lesson and practice. But I wouldn't like to wait longer than that so I'll hold off on the work until I'm actually playing and can see results.

Portmarnock links this weekend, Euopean Club early november, St. Andrews mid november...
Hope to play the european club a few times over the winter to keep competitive... maybe rosslare too which is more convenient to me.
I'm determined not to 'arrive' at next april and have to 'learn' the game all over again like what happens most years.
Hopefully will have some kind of winter series at home too but hard to enjoy the really heavy conditions that are likely this winter.

You have to keep your hand in over the winter. Most courses will be doing deals too such as round of golf and some sort of meal if last winter is anything to go by. also the driving range once a week at least to try and get the game in shape for the new season would not go amiss. I am already looking forward to the new season roll on the Masters.

University membership in Portmarnock starting next week so that should keep me occupied along with inter varsities, colours match V UCD and a trip to Lahinch early November. Think there's something on in Enniscrone as well.

University Membership? Apart from the clue in the name, how does this system work?

    To stick with thread....

Hopefully ignore the fairweather voice inside me and get out to at least the range each week with the rare outing onto a course...

I'm a first year student in Trinity college. Signed up to the Golf Society, went to the AGM (2 weeks ago). We were told that the 10/11 lowest H'Caps get membership in Portmarnock. Most of us filled out an application form, and lo and behold, 2 days ago I got membership. The higher H'Caps get membership in Royal Dublin. We use Portmarnock for trials and matches.

Going to spend most of my time working on my fitness to improve my stamina and strength.

I like taking a couple of months off as builds the hunger up for the game and makes you raring to go.

What do you plan on doing Trampas? I'm interested in doing similar. Think i really need to get a bit more upper body strength.

Running a couple of miles a week. Have a grass area near me which I can run around as easier on the knees.

Exercise (sit ups, stomach crouches, press ups)

Not going to be lifting weights and all that goes with it as doing the above should do the job.

Good, often overlooked point. Running on roads wrecks your knees and does untold damage.

Totally agree. When you play alot, it's easy to lose that hunger. The extra bit of enthusiasm can boost performances.

Will hit the driving range more frequently - find it a great stress release to just go and bash a few balls around during these winter months! Intend to play a proper round every couple of weeks as well.

Decided to take that advice... i've played non-stop really for 18 months and it's not been as much fun lately. I've cleaned the clubs and put them away. Not going to touch them until after the new year. The thoughts of no-golf is killing me a little but i think i'll benefit come the new year. Hopefully come back and blitz the winter league and go flying into the new season!

I am the same am in the mist of footy season so very little golf if any for a while...

I plan on getting about 4 - 5 lessons on all parts of the game in Jan - Apr to get the little problems I know are there ironed out and start practising hard from Apr or so.....

Well the weather at this stage is so bad that all plans go out the window.
Have absolutely no urge to hit a ball in this damp, wet, windy, cold climate at the moment.
Anytime I get the clubs out it starts to piss rain. Its like groundhog day.

How's the winter fitness plan going Trampas?

    Going ok Graeme.

Was slow over Christmas and need to lose a couple of extra pounds.

Plan to start swinging a club again next month.

I think it is late October since I picked up a club. Tiger Woods 09 on the Wii doesn't count.

    Good stuff Trampas!

Somebody told me a story last weekend about a japanese guy, who turned up at St Andrews. They asked him what he played off, he said "4". He took a caddy for the day. The caddy said on the first tee, "what's your handicap." Player said "4".

The Japanese guy stands on the first tee and can barely hit it out his way. This continued for the next couple of holes, the guy racking up cricket scores.

The caddy says to him, "i thought you said you played off 4". The player says, "yes i do".

Caddy says: "what club do you play out of?"

The guy says: "oh, no club... on the Wii!"

    :D

Could just be one of these urban legends, but it gave me a laugh anyway.
