dusty dust!

    Hi,
Not sure if this is the right forum to ask about this but here goes anyways! I have just moved in to a new apartment with boyfriend, unfortunately its extremely dusty. When we came to see it there was no sign of dust at all but when we moved in it was so dusty you could actually feel it in the air. Now it doesn't bother me but my bf is allergic to it so he's sneezing all the time, basically he's not comfortable in his own home. I'm not the most domesticated but thought dusting and stuff would get rid of it so we've cleaned the place, dusted big time, aired the mattresses, washed the cushions from the couch, leave the windows open all the time even though its bloody freezing and it just seems to be getting worse.
The first day I moved in I put the hoover on and a few minutes after I noticed a cloud of dust so I think whats happened is the hoovers broken and probably before the other people left they may have hoovered and spread the dust. We've been here a while and the dust is still brutal.I try to sweep, mop and dust every day but its like its in the air or something, has anyone got any suggestions, any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

If it's a new build then you can expect dust for a while - especially if the complex is not yet complete. It will subside in time.

I hope you mean the dust, and not the complex!

Going on your remarks concerning the hoover, you might want to try either getting it looked at, i.e. is there a bag in it (unless it's a bagless one), if so is it ripped or full, is there a dust filter installed, etc. You could be just redistributing the dust around the apartment instead of actually collecting it :)

Otherwise if it's just clapped out, get a new one, preferably one that has a good HEPA filter for allergy sufferers such as one of the Miele range. They are (very) expensive admittedly, but they're built to last and you may well never have to buy another one ever again, so in the long run they're worth it.

Go to http://www.miele.ie/ie/domestic/products/suche_bodenstaub.asp and select the "For Allergy Sufferers" check box to the right.

Agreed, a Dyson vacuum cleaner with a decent HEPA filter will seriously assist with this, they are approved by various asthma societies etc.

Even the standard bagless vacuums clean up a significantly larger amount of dust without a hepa filter.
