Where to get a laptop fixed in Dublin? Help!

Folks, does anyone have any recommendations for a fast laptop repair place in Dublin? Preferably city centre but otherwise around Glasnevin/Drumcondra/Finglas would also be good.

I'm going away to the States in a few days and my laptop has chosen this time to break. It's nothing too serious but it's going to make it very difficult to use over there and I'm really going to need it. Slight panic stations at the moment cos I've no idea where to go. Do places like Peats or Maplans fix things?

Mods: I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the Laptops forum. I've looked through that forum and couldn't find anything to help so I thought I'd put it here instead. Feel free to move if I made a bad call on that one:)

There used to be a place beside Hogans on Georges Street - not on George Street itself but on the street with the Market Bar. It was upstairs there next to Hogans and called the Computer Doctor I think. This info is about five years old so I'm not sure its still there. If they are still there, they were very decent and reasonably priced when I used them.

Might also want to try Computer Repair under GoldenPages.ie

What do you mean when you say it's broken? Can you give us a bit of a description of the problem you're having?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, much appreciated. Keep 'em coming! I'm going to ring a few of them tomorrow and see who can do fix it quickly (fingers crossed...)

Well, for the past few months the power charger has been a bit crappy. I've had to twist it a certain way to make sure that it's charging the laptop. A couple of days ago it just stopped working; there's no power going in to the laptop at all, no matter what way I twist it.

Now obv it could be just a problem with the power charger; I'm hoping that this is the case cos it means I can just buy a new one and all will be grand. However in case there's a problem with the actual laptop itself - a loose connection of some kind - then I'll need to get it fixed.

Does that make sense? I've no idea whether this is a big job or not. Hopefully not...

You're getting your streets mixed up. There never was a computer repair place on Fade Street. However, there is the Computer Hospital on Lwr. Stephen's Street upstairs next to the Capital Bar. I can recommend them. Also, Back From The Future opposite Capital Bar on Aungier St. do repairs. There are some Chinese guys next to Hogans on George's Street who repair laptops and phones. So there are at least three places within about 50 metres of each other in the George's Street area.

It sounds like your charger's head is gone, I had a few laptops this happened to, the wires fray and break inside the insulation and it stops charging. I just replaced the chargers or repaired them.
Also it could be the socket on your laptop but you'd notice it flimsy and a slight movement when the charger is plugged into it, this will require re-soldering it, but hopefully this isnt the problem.
Maplins in blanchardstown would have what you need and if you had your lap with you I'm sure one of them would test it for you before selling it to you, but I'd put money its just a charger you need.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

If you think it's just the charger, Peats Parnell St have a Trust one for about €55. Adjustable voltage, comes with a load of different adapters. Maplin's in Jervis St have them too I think. Bring the laptop to the shop, and get them to try the new charger in it. Don't forget to get a US socket adapter!

Thanks a mil for all the help everyone. Appreciate it. I tried Peats and Maplins but the universal chargers that they had didn't fit my apparently awkwardly-sized laptop (luckily they tried them out for me before I paid for them).

Headed up towards the Georges Street/Camden Street direction and eventually got a charger that worked in <right-click>. Unfortunately the guy there said that there's a pin broken in my laptop which means at some stage the charger just won't work in it anymore, and it would need an electronic engineer to fix it (I'm not an electronic engineer. I'm like, the opposite of an electronic engineer, if that's possible). It seems no computer shop would be able to fix it.

So short term: Yay! It's going to work for America, which is what I wanted. Long term: Not so good, Al. Going to have to get a new one at some stage. Boo.

I would recomend Marxcomputers just off the malahide road but it would depend whats wrong with you laptop?? there is also another place in phisboro beside the shopping centre that specialises in laptop repair, supposed to be good!

Also is your laptop a toshiba by any chance, cos if it is, it is more than likely the power jack on the mother board, know issue on most toshiba laptops and could be fixed under warranty, also some models where recalled and repaired for free, if not you may get away with re-soldering the jack or replacing it, around 80 euros in a repair shop?

I remember you talking about buying a new computer within the last year or so. I know you're smart, especially for a woman, but if you bought it within the last year you might have a warranty from the manufacturer/retailer. You might even have a strong argument under the Sale of Goods Act.

Wow, I'm so lucky to have big, strong internet men who can point out stuff like this to me :P

I do indeed still have the warranty but the problem was that the glitch happened a couple of days ago and I'm off to the USA on Monday so I needed to get it fixed asap. Totally didn't have time to hang around for a month waiting for them to fix it and send it back to me, so figured I'd just pay whatever money it took to get someone to fix it for me as a stop-gap solution.

Won't have a case under Sale of Goods Act cos I'm pretty sure it's my own fault but I will indeed be getting on to the manufacturers when I get back in a couple of weeks. Merci pour le reminder.

Not sure if anyone is still using this thread but I got my laptop fixed in a day for e30 from an aussie guy. Really impressed with the speed and I havent had any issues since and that was over 6 months ago. My laptop kept complaining it wanted Bios CD, he used a BIOS CD although mentioned that if it relapsed that I might need to get a new harddrive and he even looked around for cheap ones for me!! Email me on l_moorej@yahoo.ie if you want his details, don't like posting ppls phone numbers on boards
