hi, was wondering if someone could help me on how this should be wired, i dont think its right the way considering the tone control is dead and the J volume sends the volumes up in the middle then down again wide open when the P is wide open..... weird....

    PickupWIreing.jpg

its a left hand pj bass(if the backwardness makes you sickly apologies!!), for now would be happy with tone and 2 vol so any help appreciated.
some other time wen i upgrade the pickups id like to do a tone blend volume setup but thats another day!!!

    1. and 2. are from the P pickup
    3.4.5 are from the J
    7. is the bridge earth
while 8. is the tone cap (am i right?) and has on end soldered to the middle arm of the tone pot while the other is free!!

thought the numbers might help if the pics messy
    thanks and seriously appreciated!!

was checking that out alright, but found it hard to follow the wiring the way it is, epecially since there seems to be 3 wires comin outta the J pup, move them over to the P pup vol, move 6. to the tone control and solder down the free end of the cap,and run another wire from the tone to the jack??

You've got the wrong lug connected to earth. Looking down, the ones on the right should be grounded and the other end of the tone cap needs to be soldered to the top of the tone pot, otherwise it won't have any effect.

You're trying to do a vol vol tone setup?

Here, this is a standard jazz setup, it will do what you need.

hi thanks for that, gunna get on it, the original wiring wasnt done by myself actually i havent touched it yet, just got the bass to find the tone knob dead!
i thought the ground was right, going from the SD diagram and stewmac diagrams, the inner circle of the jack, the hot is goin straight past the tone pot to the jack, which ill have to change n run a wire from the tone to the jack?
Quick question tho, a blend pot is a special bot for blending yes?you cant use one of the volume pots and the 3 in such a way that it blends?when the knob is full back it sends the P pup to earth, middle the two play, and full forward the J goes to earth no?
probably a dumb Q but was curious. great job on the restoration thread btw Doctor J, im guessin your the guy to answer this after pulling that job off.
    thanks all!

If you want to blend you'll need a specific blend pot which you can get here.

The diagrams are from a looking onto the bottom of the pots perspective, so the ground should be on the right lug, definitely.

Your best bet would be to undo all the wiring on the bass and start from scratch. Follow the stewmac diagram and it will work as you require. There's enough wrong with what you have in the pic for it to be a pain in the hole to try to fix, it would be quicker to start again.

was thinking the same about rewiring the lot now i know the layout and i think i could handle adding the blend pot myself. if i get a blend pot should i get a 500k, was reading somewhere theres added impedence running a blend pot. thanks alot for the help ,should get it sorted now!

Justing finished wiring up my SD' 1/4ers today, and a nice little blend pot, love the sound,a little hum of the J but ya wouldnt notice it much, the P blares all anyways!!! having read of stories of losing volume when both pickups are full on with a blend pot,i havent noticed anything at all,and delighted i gave it a go. my first time rewiring a bass or installing new pickups and glad i gave it go. found too handy sites where i got my bits n pieces, so ill leave the adresses here as i found they had whatever ya could need, i know theres stewmac but i didnt fancy paying the extra shipping or the chance of extra duty when they reach customs. so for its worth here's the sites

http://www.axesrus.com/axecart.htm got my blend pot from here, i got the mini 500k as i think the other one they have is half volume in the middle. works great. got a few other things too,new knobs and strap locks.and the shipping was only 2 blips altogether i think.

http://www.guitarpartsshop.co.uk/ got my SD's saved a little over the thomann route since i wanted to pick up some caps n pots too.

maybe someone will find them useful too! thanks for the help people!! couldnt have done it with you the people of the boards!!

    cheers

    aL
