Converting video for PS3

    Hey guys,

I'm having a problem with some videos I've converted to AVI format for the PS3. They were originally H264 encoded MKVs (high def), but when I convert them using alltoAVI, the resultant AVI isn't recognised as a valid format for the PS3 - alltoAVI insists on converting H264 media using XVID. The resultant video plays fine on my PC, btw - the issue is the PS3 doesn't support whatever format it ends up as (some particular XVID setting must be upsetting it).

I only have this issue with this particular conversion (H264 media -> XVID AVI file), other XVIDs/AVIs work fine....

    Soooo....

Has anyone else come across this problem, and if so, did you get around it?
Maybe there's different conversion software i should use to get good vids at the end? What do people use to convert video?

PLEASE don't suggest media server streaming - I specifically want the files to reside on an external hard drive - i already have a working media server, its just a bit crap for streaming large videos over wireless link....

    Dave

Download the latest version of Handbrake. It has built-in presets for PS3.

    Alright,

I downloaded some MKV files as well and I used this program to convert them to AVI.
    http://www.3r1c.eu/mkv2vob/mkv2vob.exe

I set the destination type to AVI using MPEG2 and it converts from MKV to AVI in less than 5 mins.

When I tried the AVI's on the PS3 it comes up as "Corrupted Data" but i just hit X on the file and the video played no problem.

    hi,

    try this:
    http://www.3r1c.eu/mkv2vob/mkv2vob.exe

i used it to convert to AVI (MPEG2) and it worked in less than 5 mins. The PS3 said the file is "Corrupted Data" but i just hit X and the video played fine.

There's no need to convert h264 media to xvid. The ps3 will play h264 codec fine if it's in the right container.

Use mkv2vob. It'll remux the audio and video stream to a different container so it usually only takes a few minutes per movie. I use mp4 as sometimes ps3 doesn't like h264 codec in avis.

Could be a profile issue which prevents the PS3 playing the encode..

I've found the best thing to do is to use TS Muxer when dealing with HD MKV files....either to create AVC HD discs or M2TS files..
That way you can either create pseudo-BD DVDs which can playback on any BD player, or the PS3.......or create a stream file (M2TS) which can be played back straight on the PS3 via USB stick, internal HDD, external HDD etc....with 5.1 etc intact..
Straight M2TS files may be your best option is you want to store individual files..

Good place to start is here..
    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_mkv_to_avchd_for_ps3_and_blu-ray.cfm

The likes of mkv2vob do further conversion in a more convoluted way, but all you really need to playback files such as these is a basic understanding of what the original file profile is..
Say, if most of the MKVs you find on the net (US HDTV broadcasts), they are usually encoded in profile 4.1 anyway, so they don't require much interaction..

If this is close to what your problem is ravydavygravy, then a quick run through of the guide above may help you out.......personally, I've found it the best method for getting intact files onto the PS3..........just ignore the section in creating Blu-ray discs and just focus on M2TS muxing to just create one file..

Why bother converting .mkv files to avi.
Loosing all the high def quality.
    Instead use mkv2vob.
Within the configuration tab select mt2s which is the blu-ray equivalant of high def and also select fat32 limit for your external drive.
Takes about 10 mins per image and you get to keep all the high def goodness :D

gotta agree mkv2vob is the best way, free and very simple to use, click and burn,

Brilliant - thanks for the advice - these all sound like better ideas than the way I'm currently doing things!!

You may also want to try PS3Video9 by Redkawa.

I use it all the time. It does full encode [not just a container swap] but it works 100% of the time.

You just can't stream or copy it from WMP11, have to use TVersity or USB.

Will the PS3 play mt2s files?

And does AVI not allow for HD? I thought it could handle HD.

    hi,

my friend has a PS3 and wants to play m2ts files on his unit.

I can convert them as mentioned above but does the ps3 support dts m2ts ?

how are ye playing these files then, burning them to disc (what size) or by ext hard drive (fat32 or ntfs) - if fat32 does it support 8gb files ?

he has a ide-multimedia hd but wants to upgrade to watch hd files.

what other methods do ye use to watch hd files.
any opther hints etc would be appreciated.
    thx

edit - and what about playing standard avi's ??

Ext HDD is FAT32 [4GB max file size]
    Convert to DivX or MP4.

Use PS3Video9. Easiest and best I've used. Will convert almost any source to a PS3 watchable video.

Internal HDD can take bigger files. Don't know max size.

I copy all my vids onto PS3 internal 329GB HDD. Never had a problem but I only have stereo speakers [TV].

I'm pretty sure DivX and/or MP4 video can do surround sound.

I'd recommend Handbrake now over Redkawa and SUPER. It will read a ripped VOB directory as a whole and will also allow encoding of multiple audio tracks (AC3, MP3, AAC all in one file) and subtitles.

Check out PS3 Media Server (http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/) for streaming. It will stream MKV files with full 5.1 or DTS sound to the PS3, x264 HD video.

DivX can keep the original audio source but as with anything using AVI, yu are going to be stuck with AVI limits. MKV is definitely out ahead and DivX is switching to the MKV container anyway, which means PS3 will likely get an update for it as well.

Up until then, it's easier then to use Mkv2vob to maintain the HD video and multiple audio tracks.

Mkv2vob allows you to set it up for the 4gb fat32 limit. If necessary it will split the HD files into <4gb chunks.

Personally, I put them from PC to a portable 80gig drive and thence onto the 320gb hard drive I have in my PS3. They'll play fine from the USB drive too though.
