Airport 'connection timeout' issues

I have an iMac (10.5) which was intermittantly timing out with the airport connection now it just won't connect at all.

It looks for the WEP key and then just times out when I try to connect. My iPod Touch, Nokia E65 and HP notebook connect without a problem but the iMac just won't.

It is a Netgear router, but the same issue was there when I had a DLink router a while back.

I have reset the WEP key all to no avail. I have searched online and can't find any solution .. would anyone here have any ideas?

Have you tried using the Network Diagnostic Utility in Safari? If you launch Safari and it can't connect to the internet it displays a page with a "Network Diagnostic Utility" button. Click the button and step through the dialog boxes.

I have, it sees the wireless network, looks to connect and then times out with the same error message.

The only thing I think I have forgotten to check is trying to connect without a wep key, if I disable the security it reckon it will connect. Therefore isolating the problem to a WEP key issue!

Are there any other wireless network in the vicinity? Have you tried changing the wireless channel?

First things first, get rid of WEP. Go to the router config page via Safari and change to WAP security and set a password. You will more than likely find that this will work better.

I reset the router and turned off the secutity and the mac will connect with no problem.

Once I use WEP or WAP I get the connection timeout error, despite the iPod Touch and Nokia phone connecting!!

I am at my wits end at this stage and can't believe that I will now have to have a cable running up stairs !!

So, once last call out, has anyone any suggestions? :(

Have you got the latest security updates installed? If the system is up to date you could try manually deleting the network preference files and reconnecting then.

Then it must be the wrong key you're providing to the Mac. Remember the key is case sensitive so enter something simple as a WPA key in the router and go to System Preferences > Network & Internet> Network - select the Airport card on the left pane and select the advanced button on the bottom right of the window.

There should be a list of recently connected networks in this section. Delete any reference to your own network by hi-lighting it and clicking the '-' key underneath the section.

Now click the '+' key and enter your Wifi SSID or the name of you wireless network And select from the drop down menu under this field the type of security you have set in the router - WPA or WEP - it's really better if you set the router to WPA2. Then enter exactly the password you gave the security section of the wireless router. Remember case is important and avoid spaces if you can. Tick Remember this network so to avoid entering this every-time you connect.

Let us know how this works out for you.

I'm having the same issue myself with 10.5 today. The strange thing is I have 2 other laptops (both Windows XP) and one connects while the other also doesn't connect. I can't figure it out at all, it's driving me nuts!
