Student Centre kicks out students

    From the student newspaper:

The student centre kicked a number of students out for refusing to only consume food obtained from one of the student centre cafe's (or shops).

I know it most likely reads differently to what actually happened but in fairness I have to admit that all college food facilities are overpriced and/or serve **** food. I haven't eaten a dinner in the main for nearly twelve months as a result of how bad the last one was.

Anyone have any opinions of their own?

The food in the main rest is the most disgusting food I have ever come across and yes the food is way too expensive for what you get

I assumed that the quality of the food in the Main Restaurant improved since Cambells Catering no longer run it.

Well if it has improved I can't begin to imagine what it was like.

I think we're going off topic a bit. If a student cant eat their own lunch in the student centre on a rainy day where else can go? I can see the restaurants point of view in that they want to make money but students pay for part of the running of that building with their fee's.

In my opinion the Student centre is just a commercial building which provides far too few free services to students. Granted its slightly cheaper then most places but so it should be with the funding they're getting. If they was a vote this year I think there would be a landslide no to continued funding.

to throw them out on a rainy day was lousy, I agree with redroad that the students fund it, so they should be able to eat there

Saw this once too, was a group of guys eating hillbillys, the whole common room stank of chicken, people were actually walking away at the door going 'wtf is that stink' :D Could also be messy food, got a bollicking for spilling popcorn there once.

But yeah, been eating in UCC since 2002, it's just gone downhill! Good in 2002-2003, medicore in 2004 and 2005, bad in 2006 and 2007, hated it last year, thankfully don't eat in the main anymore.

Its gone downhill since Kylemore took over the catering contact. Quiznos,Starbucks,Bagel Company, Apache Pizza ... look you idiots we're not Americans, I dont want to pay €4.50 for a vente, trim, soy frappacachino and €6 for a bagel that wouldn't fill my hampster.

They seem to have a policy of making the food in the main as awful as possible in an effort to drive students up to the 'rip off' mini.

The coffee in the SU should only be used for stripping rust and cleaning car batteries.

    Sorry rant over

the food in the main rest is absolutely revolting... the staff are unfriendly and resentful (i'm sure they have their reasons but still!!! come on just be a little bit nice!) .. i avoid it at all costs!
there was a survey this week on the food in ucc and i gave out stink about the food in the main rest :) it was satisfying

I'm sorry but this is a matter of getting what you deserve. The student union had nothing better to do than bitch about the food to justify its existence since the days of Tommy Reidy and the short-lived Presidency of Cait Megan.

I spent my time down there wondering why people had it in for Campbell's catering. The food in the main was always fine (I loved the lemon chicken thing that they did now and then) and the mini was the mini, sure you always knew what you were gonna get.

I've never found the staff unfriendly or resentful - the old lady there calls everyone "luv" (in a nice way :))

Foodwise, in the Main I usually just get coffee and either a scone or a muffin. But I have got meat there before (pork and beef) and had no problems with it. I feel sorry for vegetarians - the veggie stuff always looks manky! But overall, I don't think the food is that bad.

Really, everyone should just go to Daybreak on College Road and get food at the hot counter. Hot chicken rolls/sandwiches = delicious. But get either the plain or the southern fried chicken, not the spicy chicken. (Because spicy is my favourite. And I get very mad when there's no spicy chicken left....:mad:)

Back to the original topic - the staff in the student centre are a lot less friendly than the Main staff imo. Kicking people out in the rain is a disgrace - our capitation fees contribute to the place ffs.
If I have work to do and I want food while working I'll usually go to either The Main or Kampus Kitchen before I'd go to the Student Centre.

Save for a few drunken Apache pizza runs during Rag when I was hammered and a few hot chicken rolls in the mini, I don't think I ate the main rests. food at all in my 3 years at UCC. I always brought my lunch, hell even lecturers and tutors ate in in there with their packed lunches. WTF?
