Parking in Dublin

A recent global parking survey found that Dublin is the 10th most expensive city in the world to park in, and the fourth most expensive in Europe.

City officials are planning to keep increasing parking fees as a way of encouraging people to leave their cars at home and lessen city centre congestion.

But sometimes you do just have to park.

So we took a look at some city centre car parks to find out how much you'll pay, and where you can get the cheapest deal.

Day time rates don't vary much between car parks. They all range from €2.70 to €3.10 per hour. Evening and overnight parking is when you can really find yourself paying too much - or getting a great deal.

Drury Street car park offers a €2 flat rate from 6.30 pm until midnight closing, while you'll pay €9 at Fleet Street car park - though you've got the added advantage of 24-hour opening.

The best deal for evening is to find street parking, as many pay and display areas only operate until 7pm, leaving evening parking free.

If you do find street parking during the day, you can expect to pay €2.70 per hour in the city centre, €2.20 per hour slightly farther out, €1.50 per hour farther out, then €1 per hour in the 'low demand zone' and 60 cent per hour in suburban villages. Maximum parking time is three hours.

Airport parking is another place you'll want to find the cheapest rate. The official Dublin Airport long term car park is currently the best deal, charging €7 per day - but only if you book online ahead of time.

For a much more comprehensive list with details of car parks in Dublin and around the country, see AA Roadwatch's site at www.aaroadwatch.ie/parking.

Try Dublinparking.com if you want to rent a space long term. Daft.ie and Gumtree also have classified ads for parking spaces.

There are still plenty of free parking spaces, especially in Dublin 1 but, of course, I'm not going to reveal where they are! ;)

I need a parking place from Saturday morning until Monday morning.

I'll be staying on Fleet street at the Morgan Hotel but do not want to park here:

Any help would be really good. :)

Opinions on parking at the hotel named Royal SAS.. down Georges street to the right somewhere..?

I won't be needing the car from Saturday til Monday so I need topark for two nights..

Bus/Train is not an option since we've quite a few personal bags to take up.

This may be my plan for now
    Jervis Shopping Centre Car Park
Location: Jervis Street on the right
Access: Take left off Ormond Quay onto Jervis Street and right into Jervis Shopping Centre Car Park.
    Opening Hours: Monday-Wednesday 7am to 7:30pm; Thursday 7am to 10pm; Friday 7am to 9:30pm; Saturday 7:30am to 8pm; Sunday 10:30am to 7pm

Tariffs: €2.80 per hour; Maximum charge: €12 per day.

It'll cost about €30 for the period I'm staying there.

I like the Dublin Airport long term parking. 7.50 - 9.50 per 24 hour period to park on Gravel. Shocking.

I can remember parking in Harveys Quay in Limerick when it opened for 90c per hour.

I just paid 1.90 in Thomas St Limerick for up to an hour. I hate parking in Dublin but get over it because its not very often.

QuickPark is also on gravel. In fairness, the DAA/Quickpark would prefer to have a proper surface but they are not permitted to do so. Most of those long term car parks are run with temporary planning permission and it must be reapplied for every six months. The planners insist on gravel for drainage/flood plains etc.

(Zones Y and Z in the DAA Red Long Term have full permission and hence are fully paved).

I wouldn't mind seeing that Survey, was going to park in Amsterdam one day, looked at the sign.. 8.50/hour... 12am - 12pm ... mental.

Q-park practically have a monopoly on the private parking in Europe.

Was in New York recently saw parking for $19 per hour!

Strangely it was €38 if you opted for all day parking in exact same car park.

Yes, I've seen similar in different parts of the US. Others have a very high initial hour rate and then it nose dives - very common in LA. e.g. €15 for first hour, then €2 per hour after that. Possibly connected with valet parking?

Could you imagine trying to fully pave them now. You would never know when the owners of the cars are coming back.

I have heard stories of cars abandoned in airport car parks around the world and claiming to Insurance companies that they have been stolen. Nobody is ever going to find them.

Ver simple. They close a zone to incoming traffic and gradually allow it to empty. 95% of the cars will be gone in 3 weeks and they 'lift' the remainder to another zone.

Same thing happens when closing a car park for the winter.

DAA round them up once a year or so. Some people abandon old cars there also rather than pay to have them disposed of properly.

Funny you should say that, i left my car for so long in the underground car park near work that it had a coat of white dust on it, an employee had written the date on the back window so he would know when it was last moved. They report it to the cops after a period with the chassis number/plate number (usually on the window under the glass) and the cops check if it has been reported stolen etc.

    4 southside, 1 northside! :)

The Ilac Centre, Irish Life Mall, Arnotts and Jervis Street would be some of the busiest carparks on the north inner city.

Jervis Street SC used to do a great all day rate. I'm not sure if they still do but it was €9(?) for all day parking I think and they also used to offer a discounted five pass ticket for €40 which worked out at another €1 less per day.

I saw this story on RTE a while back about Dublin being fourth highest in Europe http://www.rte.ie/money/2008/0924/parking.html.

I was a little skeptical so went to look for the survey and think I found it http://www.colliersmn.com/PROD/cclod.nsf/publish/09E7E2B5FA70728F85257489005AEF5A/$File/Colliers+International%27s+2008+Parking+Survey.pdf.

It looks to me like the RTE staff misread the report because on hourly rates at least Dublin is not as high as claimed.

There is an alphabetical list on page 6 which does alphabetically lists Dublin tenth and fifth of European cities which is where I think the mistake came from.

    Brussels Belgium 30.77 192.33
    Bucharest Romania 7.69 153.86
    Budapest Hungary 13.85 307.72
Cape Town South Africa 9.02 137.77
    Centurion South Africa 4.38 50.10
Century City South Africa 8.02 87.67
    Copenhagen Denmark 51.58 412.65
    Doha Qatar 6.55 N/A
    Dubai UAE 34.73 198.48
    Dublin Ireland 33.85 507.74
    Durban South Africa 3.76 68.88
    Düsseldorf Germany 43.08 253.87
    Eindhoven Netherlands 21.54 209.25
    Frankfurt Germany 46.16 261.56

And they are increasing. Proposed Bye-Laws now intend to make amendments to the 2008 Parking Control Bye-Laws. Prices in many zones will increase....

Zone 1, Yellow Zone from €2.70 per hour Monday to Saturday to €2.90 per hour Monday to Saturday, and from €1.30 per hour on Sundays to €1.40 per hour on Sundays.

Zone 2, Red Zone will increase from €2.20 per hour, Monday to Saturday to €2.40 per hour, Monday to Saturday.

Zone 3, Green Zone will increase from €1.50 per hour, Monday to Saturday to €1.60 per hour, Monday to Saturday.

There are no increases in Parking Tariffs for Zone 4, Orange Zone or Zone 5, Blue Zone.

    Hi,

Can anyone confirm what time the Jervis street car park opens at in Dublin on Sundays? I have searched the web and found many different times posted and just want to make sure.
