Upgrading from D40 - Lens Issue

Im considering selling my D40 and getting maybe a D80/90 or something with a larger sensor to get that extra crop when needed, and more lens compatibility than the D40. I reckon ill have trouble selling a D40 body only because its usually a starter camera and most people will want a lens, so i'll probably sell it with the kit 18-55.

Thing is, I recently bought the Sigma 70-300 APO lens (the motor lens). Now I know the reason these things have built-in motors is for the D40/x/60, but are they compatible with bodies with motors? Couldn't find out on the net because who'd bother buying the HSM version if they didn't need it? Anyway, if anybody could enlighten me, thanks.

Yes the lenses with build in motors will work with the other bodies. Its the other way round you have problems, the non AFS/HSM lenses won't AF on the d40/d60. Generally AFS is a faster and quieter autofocus than relying on the screwdriver connection in the bodies. Most of the pro lenses are AFS now.

However, you're a little confused I think. The d80/90 have exactly the same size sensor as the d40 so you wouldn't be gaining anything there.

Im not talking about crop factor, I mean the D40s 6Mp sensor wont allow me to cut out a lot of the picture, whereas with a 10Mp sensor I can crop away a bit more.

I know the AF lenses dont work on the D40, I was just unsure if the screwdriver connection would be forcing the motor in the AFS lens and therefore damaging it.

    Thanks

Nope, they'll work fine. All the bodies with the exception of the d40/d60 have that same screwdriver AF connection, and they all work just fine with AFS/HSM lenses. It just never gets used if there's an AFS lens attached (the body 'knows' about the AFS connection).

Exactly what I was looking for. Wanna buy a D40? :D

    Hi noblestee,
I'm actually looking for a D40, I don't mind if it's only the body as I can buy the lens separatelly.

I can not send you private messages, but if you want contact me by email and maybe we can get a deal: [edited]gone :)[/edited]

    Cheers!
