Hi, I also have this posted in the MMA forum but posted here also...

Is there a certain age that people generally take this up at? I have been considering MMA for a little over a year now but just didnt wanna be embarassed when i turned up and gettin whipped by people who have been training since they were kids, also the fact that I know its frustrating for others when you are working with beginners and dont fancy being in that situation:o Im 24 and have no martial arts training whatsoever but I did do boxing for while as a friend worked in the gym.

I'd be confident that I would be able to hold my own though just wondering if anyone else has found themselves in a similar situation? if so, would you recommend any particular gym or does it matter if you a beginner? Im based in Dublin 15.

    Thanks.

Don't worry about it. MMA is a relatively young sport in Ireland and many people have only taken it up in their 20's, or even 30's/40's! I think you'll find most people training are around your age range. Don't worry about being tapped by a 15 year old - Leave your ego at the door and you'll progress much faster :)

Most of the people I see at the introductory course in the gym would be in their mid twenties I would say, with a fair smattering of older people too.

There's no attitude of "if you're not winning championships, you're just taking up space" in any MMA gym I've ever been to. Every good level guy I know is only too happy to work with a "beginner" (as long as they don't do anything crazy!) - it allows them to try out new techniques themselves, and focus on the fundamentals in a conscious way so that they can explain them.

As for being embarassed - you will be! It's human nature, so accept it now:
You will be tapped out by people much smaller than you. maybe even girls!
You will let an audible fart rip at some stage in your first few weeks.
You will find yourself with someones sweaty crotch on your face (and not in a good way).

But pretty soon you'll find that far from being embarassed by these things anymore, you'll see them as just part of the fun of MMA.

Ok, Thanks for the comments. Next stop,a Gym. Anyone in the forum a member here xxx , its the closest one to me at the moment.

Can you just turn up for beginer classes or do most places have a certain period to start so everyone is on a similar level, ie would I be joining in the middle of the season per say if i went up in a few weeks?

We are not allowed talk about that particular gym following the threat of legal action. I would advise you make the effort and try out a few different mmagyms, to see what suits you best.

We're probably the closest gym to Dublin 15. Click on my sig for details. Most guys in my gym start in their 20s.

I couldn't possibly comment on any gym mentioned above as any comments may be construed as negative and lead to legal recourse... or something.

    The Devil,

I'd recommend Barry's place, KO Martial Arts. Once you get over his woeful sense of humour you'll find it's a great atmosphere and solid training.
