Anyone familiar with the Met? Do you have to me a UK citizen / have lived in the UK for many years?

Is it a similiar entry process and training regime to the Gda?

    Thanks

Could you not just have PM'd me, or did ya think I worked for Met Eireann? :p

No you can be Irish or EEA to apply but you have to have been living in the UK for 3 years prior to application for vetting purposes.

The entry process for the police here (average 80,000 applicants per year to the police service and roughly 5% success rate) is stringent and can be a lengthy process. It can take anything between 9 months and 5 years to get onto a training course (though the latter is the exception), the average wait is about 18 months to get into training.

Probationer training is two years after which you are confirmed in post and can apply to move location, role, force. Once appointed you may also apply for specialist roles, though in reality very few specialist roles are handed out to newly appointed probies.

Random if you want to know anything specific then either pm me or post on here. The job here has its up and downs...lot of politics, but also a lot of adrenaline, danger, excitement and paperwork!

Course I could have PMed you but wanted to share the answers with the world :)

Living in the UK for 3 years? Jasus .. that's a big undertaking for someone currently living in Ireland ..

Was looking at the Gardai but now looking at The Met as a possible alternative.

Random, if its something you're serious about it might be worth ringing up some individual forces as I believe not all apply the three year rule as strictly as the MPS. For instance if you have a look at Beds Police's recruitment site here you'll see that living outside of the UK doesn't preclude you from applying, it just means a lengthier application time. To be honest, the Met seldom recruits directly now. Most of the application packs are given out at specific recruitment events etc, so a lot of people who want to work in London join a county force and transfer. Worth considering if you've made your mind up to try for the job here.

As I said, if you need any advice or help, drop me a PM :pac:

Interesting comments about the other forces maybe not requiring x amount of years residency .. didn't think to check that as I wasn't aware transfers were permitted across forces.

Not really sure what I'm doing at the moment .. just trying to weigh up all the options .. see what's out there and available, see what I want to do for the rest of my life !
