Feel free to move this if it's in the wrong forum..

I work with a lovely girl in my school and we're good friends. She was the Special Needs Assistant in my classroom last year. Government cut backs means schools are losing SNAs and she's now out of a job. This is really bad and we're all upset about it.

She's looking for a job elsewhere as a temporary SNA but is already working another job after school and has a mortgage to pay off and high blood pressure etc.

She really wants to do primary school teaching but can't freeze her mortgage or stop working for the 3 year course. She can't to do a post grad as she has no degree and doesn't have Honours Irish. She'd be willing to study for the Gaeilge leaving cert though.

She has a nursery nursing diploma (level 9) and 2 certs with distinctions that she did 17 years ago. (There was no degree at the time) Is there anyway it could be brought up to the staus of a child care degree? Could modules be added on? Could she enter into say, the third year of a course or study from home part time? Is there any other place she could work with that qualification for a decent wage?

She can't go back to working in a creche/nursery because she'd be back down to 19k as she has no degree!

It's just so annoying that someone with loads of experience teaching young kids, that has such a talent for it can't get the money deserved or opportunity and is having such bad luck at the moment.

    Thanks a million guys! :)

Should probably be in an Education forum.

I think so too - We'll try Teaching and Lecturing and see what the moderators there think.

Well, unless she's willing to do her L.C. Hons Irish and then the 3 year degree, the primary teaching option is out in this country.

Her best bet would be to either do one of the Special Needs Assistant courses (there's one in Drumcondra I think) or FETAC modules in Understanding Special Needs or Special Needs Assisting (Level 5 or 6) to bring her qualifications up to date. This plus her experience should increase her chances of getting another SNA position.
