Find a happy place coz I fear for you, most likely the backlight connector ribbon has come loose or worse the back light is broken, its going to cost a pretty penny to fix I'm afraid hence my concern.

If its out of warranty you could attempt to dismantle the laptop and see if a ribbon has came loose - there are so many possibilities to what could be wrong - Video Card, invertor board, back light (CCFL) etc...

My advice - tell your brother and pay for the damage by getting it fixed!! Best of luck
