Just wondering if any boardsies have got their Xandros Eee's to work on the college network?

I tried to get around it using wpa_supplicant before the summer break but had no luck :(. Spent a few hours today doing the same, but still nothing..

    Any help much appreciated,
    Cheers

Have you taken it to ISServices??

Use the XP configuration utility, instead of the Atheros utility that comes with the laptop, and it works fine (ok, with a bit flakey on WPA2, but fine otherwise). It won't hold the network & password for some reason (you have to enter them each time, which is annoying, but it does work).

I know Baza got his working fine recently, not sure how much messing around he had to do but at least it's possible. Might bring mine into the library this evening and test it out (I'm using eeebuntu atm).

Apparently ISServices are having trouble with the wireless adapters in them and asking people to use usb wifi dongles???

Is this utility pre-installed on the eee? I presume its not if its for XP, where can I get it?

Don't suppose ISServices are handing out these wifi dongles? I think I may go to the library myself soon, try connecting to the wired network..

If you have any luck with the Eeebuntu connecting to the network, let me know. Might consider switching

Have you not even connected to the wired network yet? I was under the impression that everyone has to connect over wired to submit their mac address for wifi.

    Will let you know.

    Good one.

Going Forward - I didn't manage to get my Ubuntu boot working unfortunately, only XP. However, it seems that the Wifi drivers in adamm's kernel have been updated sometime recently to include WPA Enterprise 2 support, which was lacking when I tried it myself.

Baz: you tried the script on dowlings site aye? no luck?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

Yeah, at least I think I did. The madwifi driver found the network but was just continuously prompting for a network password. I'll try again after I upgrade to Intrepid [9 days! Woot!]

I'll boot up my old laptop tomorrow and see what i have - iirc i have two that allowed me to connect to tcdwifi - remind me or something by pm.

Currently it doesn't have WPAE2 support, so scripts won't do anything. A guy from NetSoc wrote me a script ad hoc and it didn't work.

Tried my 900 on both the wireless and wired networks in the Ussher last night to no avail.
I'm guessing the wireless was because ISServices don't have my mac address, but seeing as I couldn't get on the wired I couldn't submit it.

The issue I had on the wired set up was with running the CSA script. It seems to run fine and is supposed to spit out a verification html, but it never did, so when the script got to the point where it opens the page it's generated, firefox obviously finds nothing.

Tried rebooting, running the script as root, but all to no avail. It creates the correct sub-folders, but the html never materialises. Any ideas?

I'm on an EEE 901, using ubuntu with no joy whatsoever... I think there's and added complication with the 901, in that it has a new wireless card from ralink, the rt2860.. So I'm assuming madwifi drivers aren't compatible?

You are correct. Well, you might not be correct any more, but you were once.
    Things have since changed.

//edit: I'm using a 1000H, so same hardware as you. If I ever get it working I'll be sure to post.

Yeah, when I tried to get a linux computer connected to the network last year, the CSA file didn't work for me. I did a lot of searching to try to fix the problem, and it seems broadford networks provided a basic and faulty script to send people to the authenication successful page. In the end I had to get IS Services to add the MAC adress of the ethernet card. Bring in the laptop and they'll do it, takes 5 minutes.

So they still haven't fixed the linux CSA file?? I shouldn't be suprised but that's bad, even for IS Services' standards...

Once you've got the CSA scan / MAC registration done, can you ignore the network requirements? Basically, can I get rid of McAfee and go back to avast! ?

Yup. Or get rid of AV altogether ;)

If you are an aware browser you won't get any viruses.

Yea.. Hackers have better things to be doing than writing code for those stupid machines..

Mr McCrohan, you have failed the computer knowledge test.

Ok.. some viruses exist.. but I will not the retract the original statement that Macs are stupid machines.

    That right mathew? :P

Mac virus exist, but they are less effective as the Mac operating system does not allow files to auto-execute in the way that Windows does. Low market share is part of the reason that there aren't many Mac virus, but it's not the full story.

I have used Mac OS X, XP, Vista, and Ubuntu. OS X is the best of the bunch, in my opinion.

She's not a huge Mac user.. hadn't heard of Smultron when I recommended it after SubEthaEdit went MIA.

I use all of them on a daily basis. I'd have to say I prefer Ubuntu- for its versatility. Being able to natively run both Windows and Mac apps is an added bonus- but I end up going back to XP for programming, just to ensure a standard environment. OS X runs via a linux kernel anyhow- its really Linux with a bells and whistles GUI. You can customise Ubuntu so its virtually identical to OS X.

    1. Source.
    2. Unix. Linux = Linus's Unix. They both are based on Unix, not one on the other.
    3. Visually. And not really.

    1. There are several ways of doing it- VMware can be used to provide an actual os in Linux- totally ignoring WINE and emulators- using a VNC connection is also a good way to go about it. It depends on what you want to do- and what you have at your disposal. I use QMEU a fair bit- just a personal preference.

    2. Correct. Its a customised BSD kernel. I accept that you shouldn't flippantly mix them up- particularly with the rumoured kernel replacement for the next major release. It probably won't happen of course.

    3. Visually- yes, but for the average person walking down the street they associate Mac OS with aesthetics- show them a modded version of Ubuntu and visually they wouldn't be able to tell them apart at a glance. You could go modding individual applications if you really wanted to keep the appearance up- but its not worth the hassle (and they do the job equally as well in most cases regardless.......) It used to be that Macs were only bought by enthusiasts who knew exactly what they were buying- now the ipod brigade have them as wardrobe accessories.....

Anyhow- this is totally off topic.

but I mean, you just can't turn down OS X. I mean, what other distro gives you a free vagina with every install?
