    Hey,

Ive been referred to a dermatologist by my doctor. I have three questions in relation to this.

    1) The dermatologist I was referred to is named Dr Gillian Murphy. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with her ? More info the better!

    2) I first intended to make an appointment with her in the public clinic but was told the waiting list was 2 years. Is this normal?! Seems an insane amount of time.

    3) I then rang her private clinic and told I could make an appointment for the end of Febuary..which also seems like a long time. I was also told that the price for a first consultation is 220 euro. Wow...pricey. Is that a normal price or is she unusually expensive ?

    Thanks for your help.

Public waiting lists can be ridicuously long, especially for the good consultants.

Private waiting lists can also be long - February doesn't seem excessive. You can contact the dermatologist's office indicating that you are willing to take a cancellation, or alternatively ask your G.P. for a recommendation to another consultant.

As to cost, that sounds about right. If you have private health insurance, you might be able to claim some of that back under your policy. If not, you can claim back some tax from the Revenue on the cost of the consultation. See here for more information.

3-4 months private and 2 years public. The system is crapped even before they start cutting!!

One option rarely considered is London - on a cheap flight - and visit a consultant on Harley St. There's no wait. You can treat it as an Xmas present to yourself.

It's about £120 for the first consultation. As these consultants usually are attached to the big London teaching hospitals they get to see virtually every condition. In dermatology this is really important as once you have the diagnosis then at least you can look to improving your life.
If the treatment works you can give your prescripton to your GP for repeats. Most GPs know nothing about skin complaints and will be happy for the info.
