1% income levy will not apply to lower paid

The Taoiseach has told the Dáil that the 1% income levy proposed in the Budget will not apply to those earning the minimum wage.

Government sources have said the cost of exempting those on minimum wage from the income levy will be approximately €60m.
Last week's proposal for a 1% levy on all income has been heavily criticised by trade unions, who want the low paid excluded from the measure.

Minimum wage over 40 hours is, what, 346 a week?
    So 3.46 per week levy?
Can't help but think it's much ado about nothing...

It should apply to above the minimum wage also.

Isn't it a 35 hour week on min wage is less lucrative than state welfare?

    Needs to be higher tbh.

They should scrap the 1% altogether and just tax 5% on anybody making more then 100K.

hmm, what about those on 10c above the min wage?
Wouldn't they technically earn less then those on min wage if the levy was imposed on them?

    Dole ftw.

Live of the dole for a while, then vote the bastards out.

Hell, with all the disenfranchised people with nothing but free time out there, maybe one or two will get involved in politics, and among the lot of them, maybe one is capable of providing a bloody decent opposition party to vote for.

I like to fantasise about a better Ireland sometimes :)

3.46 * 52 = 179.92 - which is slightly more then the last annual increase in the average gas bill, so its much ado about a lot for a lot of people particularly since Bord Gas are looking for another increase on top of that one

Im currently on some groovy pain killers, so please correct me

Min wage = 8.65 (last time I remember)

so say joe bloggs is getting 8.75 because his employer likes to be able to say he doesnt pay his employees min wage.
    Now joe has the 1% levy imposed - 8.75 * .01 = 8.75c or 9c

    8.75 - 9 = 1c above min wage
Okay, he won't be earning less than those on min wage, but he is getting 1c more, lucky guy

    Or am I confused???

So has anything outlined on the original budget actually been kept, or have the government backtracked on everything? Seems a soft budget keeps getting softer, what a joke. Wheres all the extra money needed to make up these shortfalls going to come from?

I agree. I think the general idea of a 1% levy on everyone's wages to help the Government's income was an ok idea. Everyone can afford an extra 1%. No one will miss it. And now that Brian Cowen is giving in to slight pressure over this....it's a bit ridiculous.

3.46 is a bail of briquettes. That is two days heating for some.

i thought it was 1% of your entire wage, unless they've made provisions for that in this case

is this levy not now just income tax with different amounts for the bands?

Oh, and don't forget the landlords now being asked to pay an extra 200 euro per year per house will pass that on to their tennants.

YEP, but that can happen anyway if you get a raise that brings you from no PRSI to paying 4%, or from 4 to 6%.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

Problem is people will miss it,,, theres people out there who have nothing in their pockets at the end of the month and wonder how they can get nappies for the baby and petrol for the car.
