Word of advice, don't use text speak if your writing up reports or specifications!!

Well, I can tell you for one thing, you won't go far with txt speak nonsense. Intel has enough TLA's without throwing txt speak into the mix.

Anyway, sounds like you will be in Automation, utterly fantastic in terms of work experience. You will get exposure to good range of technologies, this will be great for your CV.

It all depends in what section/group you will be working, if you can find out, I can give you more details.

Sounds good, have you any idea about salaries for interns, social and all that??

I havent got my contract yet so don't really know any details to give you.

    Hi there,
If its work placement for a comp sci student I can tell you the experience of about 15 people i know that done theirs there.

Id say 3-4 of them only done some sort of work, the rest done absolutely sweet fanny adams for the 11 months they were there, as far as i can remember they got paid 16000/17000 around that, but one guy done shifts so he got a good bit more which isnt too bad. the general experience of it was that they wouldnt go back.

I wouldnt want to turn you off this, but I would definately find out exactly what you would be doing, and see will that relate to what you want or what you will be donig when you finish college. The money means nothing at the end of the day, the actual experience you get will highly depend on how quickly you get a job and how good that job is when you finish your degree.

If I were to go back again and do mine again, I would look for a java/C# role/whatever language interests you. Having relelvant experience and possibly a related 4th year project (ie. java/ur language) related will go a long way when job hunting time starts after college.

    Thats my 2cents :)

One point - there is very little development done in the Ireland site. What is done, generally wouldn't suit a co-op (that's what you will be called) :)

Yeah I wish I knew more but all I know is - I had two interviews: one for applications development and the other for automations and something to do with portable devices. I got the second one but they were looking at me for two different jobs in that one so I'm still unsure what I'll be doing.

    Is that any help??

Thanks a million for the answers so far.

If you get it don't live in Leixlip, move to the village next to it, Maynooth. Better in every way and not much difference in the distant.

Yeah well I live near maynooth and am a 3rd year student there so I know all about the roost and all the other pubs...!! I have got the job just waiting on my contract details...
So basically just looking to get an idea off people who have been there for a placement or are there now.

I worked in Intel leixlip, and yes the majority of co-ops do absolutely nothing, I remember 4 guys that sat across from me, all they done was watch traveller fights, while one of them rang scrap yards looking for car parts. I worked as part of automation support and worked 12 hour shifts I was kept busy and enjoyed the work, but i still would have preferred a programming job to give me some experience for my CV.

EDIT: live in Maynooth most of the co-op nights outs are there, always handy to staggering distance from the pub :D

Sounds like AMHS - Automated Material Handling System.

The chips are made on wafers, 300mm in size (in fab24 anyway) and are moved around in boxes (FOUPS) of 25 at a time. These boxes move around on their own little monorail system.

It's fairly Intel specific, but if you are into robotics/software interfacing with hardware, it is great experience.

It's also pretty amazing to watch them whizz around. :)

in practical terms, working in Intel for your work placement does f*ck all for you regarding your career as a software engineer/computer scientist.

If you want to work as a software developer/programmer/code monkey/BA, avoid working for Intel as it is very specific and only one big company does it in this country.

You will limit what will be available to you. Sayin that, one guy i know who done nothing in there is working with oracle and php so he done alright outa it.

Ahhh Intel, I was there 3-4 years ago for the 11 months.

Firstly, as others have said it's a lottery as to where you'll be placed. I was reasonably lucky and got a decent position with a mixture of support, web-dev & even hardware(!?). However some others were left with f-all to do, no responsibilities, and some were left fixing laptops when their degree was in Software!!

If your looking to become a programmer, there are better places to be imo, and so much of your time will be wasted at pointless meetings - some days I had 5 hours of meetings!

All things said, it will look good on your CV as long as you learn something from it. Definitely live in Maynooth. Look to be pro-active and report "good catches"(you'll learn about these) to get some kudos with your bosses.

Sounds more general if you think of it as Supply Chain Management.

Worked there for 6 months on work experience...as everybody said it is a pure lottery in what department you are put. Luckky for me I got put in a good development department and learned quite a lot. Some people spent the 6 months pushing around trollys delivering desktops.

Strangly enough I developed the Good Catch reporting system!

Everyone got the same offer the year I was there too, think its just a standard template, so I wouldn't read too much into the job description until you get there!

Beware of being put into a routine unskilled role. A lot of co-ops end up in routine jobs if they do not ask for something better.
If you are able, organised a weekly or monthly 1-1 meeting with your boss and ask for as much exposure to technology that is relevant to your degree as possible.
If you let it drift you will be used by the company instead of using it.

Document everything and get as many references as possible, many Intel higher-ups have good connections in Education and Development elsewhere outside of Intel and will be known and respected.

They are hard to work for but will reward initiative and attention to detail.

I worked there, biggest waste of my life. If you want to do development, you'll get feck all out of it.
