    Can anyone recommend any good articles giving a good summary on the background to the current world financial crisis?

    Id recommend going to www.chrismartenson.com and sitting through the crash course.
    It takes 3 hours, bring a pillow though, it's scary.

    There's a slew of books in the works on this topic. I'd check out The Trillion Dollar Meltdown by Charles Morris, which was written last year and released in April; it gives an interesting perspective on the drivers of the current problems.
