This could be in the motor bike section but applies to cars as well.

Some motorbike places balance tyres and some not if you are getting new ones.

Is it essential to get a tyre balanced?
If not is there a wobble at higher speeds?
    Any other problems?

On a motorbike your ride may be slightly uneven, i.e. you have to push slightly to the right or left and could be uncomfortable on long drives.

On cars it can wear the tyres unevenly

You should get a vibration through the steering wheel as your speed increases.

I asked if they could balance (no motorbike place name mentioned) and they said they have "never had a set of tyres back"

Wasnt happy with that, that why Im posting this to get a few more opinions.

On the subject - laser alignment. Anyone one any comments for cars and motorbikes?

It'll only be out of alignment if your forks have been repaired (re-alined) on a bike, or your wheel is slightly out of shape .... most of the bikes out there are grand without balancing
