    Hundreds queue for sub-$1 petrol

    14:00 AEST Tue Oct 21 2008

A suburb in Sydney's west is gridlocked by queueing cars after neighbouring petrol stations set off a price war that has sent the cost of fuel below $1 a litre.

The independently-owned BP service station on Sunnyholt Rd in Blacktown cut its prices from $1.40 to 97.4c this morning, prompting the newly-reopened United garage down the road to follow suit.

The prices have subsequently dropped to 94c then 92c, creating further havoc on the roads.

BP proprietor Elia El-Khoury told Nine News he expected to lose $10,000 in a day but said the bidding war was an attack on the government rather than local opposition.

"I'm going all day — just to make a noise," he said.

"The government has to look after independent people like us … and the motorists as well"

Down the road, United's Michael Dajher said both stations were "on the same wavelength".

"We're not making money, we're actually falling way below cost," he said.

"But (our customers) are all surprised — and they're all happy."

Sydney petrol prices first threatened the $1 barrier in May 2004 and burst through early last year, rocketing as high as $1.75 over the Christmas-New Year period before the global economic slowdown brought prices back under $1.50.

OPEC is now threatening to limit oil supply as the price of crude slumps to US$75 per barrel from its all-time high of US$147.71 on June 27.

Fook me that's quality! Please God they take note here in Perth, my car's almost empty.

All over the shop, hence no ozone layer and getting burnt after 15 minutes in the sun with no sunscreen on.
