Sockets or down lights?

    Hi lads,
In our plans the builder quoted us for 55 double sockets and 40 down lights (spotlights)
Now as the time comes to mark these out, we might need more than 40 lights, maybe 50
And maybe less sockets, maybe 45 double
Was just wondering, will these even themselves out cost wise?
    Thanks lads

I'd suggest you keep the sockets and cut back on down lights instead.

IMO GU10 bulbs are expensive, give a white cold light, use alot of ESB etc at (50 watts each) I have 20 in my living area but really only ever have 6 on.

I also have never had a GU10 bulb last anyway near 2000 hours.

Whereas most people usually feel they use more double sockets. IMO 6 no in Kitchen 4 no. in utility 2 or 3 at main tv or 4 per living room / lounge / family room. 2 no. min per bedroom and landing / corridor.

Consider 1 tv point per bedroom / living area. Install 3 cables, 2 for sat and 1 for external aerial, linked back to central point in utility. Then each room can be wired back to central point. 2 co-axial cable for main Sky+ box or Lidl box, so it helps future proof you.

Cable is relatively cheap, get as much done now as possible.

    double socket - typically €100
    lv downlight typically €80

ask the contractor what his rates are BEFORE you tell him what you want to increase + what you want to decrease

Whatever about the rest of the house, don't let yourself short sockets in the kitchen. Work out what you'll need - kettle, toaster, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, fridge freezer, radio the list is endless.

Also learn from my mistake, and put sockets on either side of your rooms - nothing worse than having to run extension leads for the lamp 'on the other side'

Now's the time to think about 5Amp lamp sockets as well.
We have them in the living room, ti's good to be able to turn off table lamps from the main light switches.

    Regularly do..
We specifically stuck with local trades whom we had used before or knew their work well... Has paid in the long run..

Regarding the lamp sockets... We oped not to have these but in retrospect we should have... OP if you can still have them included I would.
