i have an old fully functioning sony nw-hd5 and would like to use it as a hd?

Well when using an iPod there is no conversion per se just clicking a button in iTunes preferences to enable its Hard Drive capabilities. As far as your Sony is concerned I'd imagine there might be some similar protocol to enable it for HD use. Can you simply transfer files over to the device when it's plugged into your computer? :)
