Major Vista Problem (please help)

My problem is that my laptop won't update anymore!
I get the follwing code error when i check for updates : 80073712. I have looked this up on the net and fount a littany of stuff, Basically saying u need to run all sorts of programmes I am not that great with all the techy stuff. Anybody come accross this problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Look like this relates to corrupted system files and all the workarounds seem extremely technical.

The only way that seems to work for sure is by doing a System Restore but that depends how long you have had the problem and if you have installed much afterwards.

Would that be a runner?

Thanks for the respone Shane. I don't know if a restore would be a runner. I checked my update history since I bought the laptop. Updates have an overall 70 to 80% failure rate and are very inconsistent.

For example in April most of my updates were successful and before and after April inconsistent!

I'm lost. The failure rate shouldn't be that high!

Well i don't have any quick fix for it, but i allways start with some housekeeping.

If you download TuneUp Utilities on a 30 trial and run it.

Should clean out most of the crap in the registry etc.

After that i would try to install the latest service pack if it is not installed. Try and do a manual download of it.

are you an administrator of that pc?

you are getting access denied while removing the softwaredistribution folder, 99% of problems with windows updates are due to corrupt updates or this folder playing silly buggers.

Yeah i'm an administrator. There is only my account and a guest account on the laptop.

Even if you are signed in as an administrator, you need to run the CMD "As Administrator"

If you see Command Prompt in your start memu, right click on it and hit "Run as Administrator"

Try rebooting and reinstalling Windows update from the link

As far as i can tell all the various solutions shown on the web solve some but not all of these errors.

Give it a go anyway.

How do I know whether I am an x86 or x64 based system?

I suspect it is the x86 version. The other version is for Vista 64bit

Most people do not use that and you would probably only use it if you asked for that version specially.

If you try to install the wrong version it will probably tell you.

I have saved it in folder on my desktop. How do I run it from an elevated command prompt?

c:\users\username\desktop\file /wuforce

Where you change username to your username and change file to the filename you want

Remember to run cmd as the administrator

Tried running the programme from the deskto folder. Looked to be reinstalling and then bang same error code.

Tried elevated command, got this:

I think you forgot the file extension and got the name of the file wrong.

Should have been the below.
