Strange phone calls

About a year ago I started getting calls in the early evening from a strange number! The number seems to originate in Holland

It stopped after christmas but now its started again since the weekend
I had a few over the weekend and one about 5 minutes ago.

I have answered a couple of times and still silence so now I dont reply but still silence for 4-10 seconds and hangs up.
I have called the number many times but except for once the phone was turned off

Is this some type of scam? Has anyone any experience of this? Can anyone shed any light on the origin of this number?

I dont know anybody in Holland and its wrecking my head:(

Try not to answer. There's some scams like that which eat up your credit when you answer. Someone else might know more.

Skype or other VOIP calls are often directed through Belgium, Luxembourg, holland etc. It could be scammers, tele sales or someone local taking the pi*ss. If it gets serious you can contact the cops or your service provider and they chase it up.

You'd be surprised what's possible these days.
I'm a software engineer and I spent quite a number of yours in telecoms. There is a story around where a granny got same sort of calls and it turned out in the end it came from a huge computerized fuel store. The fuel stores control logic was configured to be ringing some number every time something happened to it that was worth a notification event - like the fuel went under a certain threshold. Someone just mistyped the number to be used when they configured the thing and surely the call was meant to go to some other system that would have 'acted' on the call. So granny got those unnerving phone calls, nearly drove her nuts.

In this day and age of everything IT it could be literally anything. Wouldn't necessarily assume its mischeavious.

Just found out its the dailling code for the hague, cant think of any war crimes I could be done for.

I rang it. It called me Agent El Jihad and said something about a package being delivered. Perhaps it's DHL?

I get the same thing sometimes, I asked the operator what country the number is from and she said Bosnia.

My wife and I had similar. A wacko was calling from Scotland for some reason.
We traced the call and it was from a wacko in Aberdeen of all places.
We asked the Irish Gardi to have a word with their fellow British friends in a police station there (which they did), and the chap had a surprise call to his house.

Within a day of us reporting it with accurate accounts of all the calls, the info we had on the number and a polite request, the calls stopped.
I suppose if your persistent enough and able to do it right, its possible to do something about it. Very helpful Gardi also made a difference.

Some of them are just call centres, they dial 5/6 numbers at a time and just talk to the first one that answers, its a time saving scheme for them as otherwise they would be holding for ages and be inefficient.

maybe the hague would be the place for them as they are a crime against humanity

some cúnt was ringing me from an 087 number on my mobile and being abusive about 6 or 7 years ago when everyone just started having one. He was stupid enough not to hide his number and i got my friend who worked in Eirpage to give me all his details. I rang back and told him who he was, what age he was, where he lived and how much he had in his credit account. I told him I'd call around and beat him and all his friends unconscious if he called me again and unsurprisingly the calls stopped.
