Friend of mine got the chance to play the infamous "postage stamp" hole in Troon a few weeks back. Its just 128 yards long but miss the green and you can end up in double figures. We were talking about it while playing at the weekend and wondered what is the Shortest hole on a full lenght course in Ireland. I know there is one on the 9 holer in Sutton which very short ... is it the shortest in the country ?

It'd be pretty unfair to include 9 hole courses. They do tend to be shorter in general.

Shortest par 3 I can think of is that one in Greystones up the hill, 4th or 5th? Up a steep hill and still only a SW or PW as far as I remember.

Shortest par 4 in Ireland has got to be the first in Milltown.

The first at Elmgreen could give it a run... it's -300 yards too. It also has a little 120 yard par three.

I think the 8th or 9th in Sillogue is under 115 yds.

I haven't been there for ages though...

    135 off the whites (7th).

    Milltown's 1st is 253 yards v Elmgreen's 270.

The 15th on the Ava course at Clandeboye is only 120 yards off the members tee. It's all downhill so plays even shorter.

There are some short par 4s too. For instance the 4th is only 274 yards off the members' tee but it's not as easy as it sounds. It's uphill with OOB right. There's a narrow entrance to the green so although it's driveable, it's a brave person who goes for the green. The sensible shot is a 5 wood to the top of the hill then a wedge onto the green.

The 3rd in Abbeyleix is 121 yards off the back tees and downhill! Lovely par 3 too, with water in front which is easy to spin back into and lots of trouble behind. Good hole on a non-descript course.

The 4th/5th, can't remember which, on Moate golf course is very short, not much more than 100yds, iirc. Miss the tiny green tho and u could be looking at a big number!

The 14th at doonbeg links is 111 yards off the blues. A cracker of a Par 3. Try hitting that green when the wind blows. Check it out here:

    Dublin City GC
Par 3 17th 123 off the whites, 112 off greens.
    Prevailing wind from behind.

In terms of least distance / highest index
    Index 8 Par 4 11th - 272yds off the whites, 250yds off the greens.

(Short, but then there is a dry-stone wall and several trees right across the fairway about 15 yds short of the green).

Lucan 4th hole when playing to the front green is only a flick. Only 1 tee box and scorecard says 88 metres.

5th hole (I think) in Thurles is short enough.

I like short par 3's with plenty of trouble

90 yard Par 3 in Cahir in Tipp..Lob Wedge across the river..The green is impossible, go above the hole and you'll be looking at 3 putts...Go over back of green and be looking at treble bogeys

16th in North West, about 85 yards I think but very tricky green to hit.

    Milltown's 1st is 253 yards .

It's actually on a little bend which means as the crow flies it's even shorter. I've hit as little as a 4 iron onto it.

The whole place bar 2 or 3 holes is shockingly short. I wonder if the new developments will stretch it out at all.

Checked out the North West Website and it looks like that 85 yarder wins the watch ! 85 yards off the back tees !!

Only played it the once and on that occasion i hit a 3-wood over the bend and it landed straight in the bunker at the back. Very short hole indeed! The whole course is short, but i found it enjoyable all the same.

Looking forward to seeing what the changes are like.

Just on the website there and there's a few pics... bit of water and plenty of sand added by the looks of it..

12th in Coolattin is 122yds, its inside a walled garden and is a raised green with a moat of sand around it, if you're not on the green :(

My home course. It's the 4th. 99 metres. Raised green, bunkers at the front and OB at the back. Have seen 9's recorded at this hole on the final evening of the captains prize.

Man, I thought they were redesigning parts of the course. That just looks like a pond and a few extra bunkers have been stuck in. Maybe the pictures don't tell all but I was expecting something good to be done and that does not look good.

Have to agree with that - superb little hole! Also the old 15th at Tramore (119m) with the gaping bunker all around the front and elevated green and I think the 3rd in Waterford is a cracker - think it is only about 110 yards!
