Economic downturn. Have you cut back on your comics?

Simple question really, have you knocked a few comics of your 'picks' list?

Me, personally, I've dropped a few, mainly Marvels and a few indies. It started when I dropped Spider-Man after One More Day. That was my 'protest' vote but I found I wasn't missing it and I knew I could catch up later with the trades if I really wanted to. That sort of led me to thinking that most mini-series ended up as trades so why was I picking these up. So a cut here, a cut there and I had a reasonable reduction in my weekly shop.

The hardest part in deciding what to drop is where the major plotline ties in to a title on the fringe. In Marvel's case, the Secret Invasion (although not really much of a secret anymore is it) has kept a couple of titles on the list for an issue or two longer.

Must admit I've thought about it but I haven't cut back much. Mostly stuff that I'd only really be taking a gamble on in the first place, I suppose - for example, where before I would at least take a look at a miniseries set in the Ultimate Universe (having previously enjoyed The Ultimates, Ultimate Iron Man and Ultimate Secret), now I'm just done with the whole setup. (Ultimate Iron Man II was just feeble beyond words, and Ultimate Human was sort of ok but pointless).

Given my buying habits, the only things I'm reading monthly right now are Stormwatch, Invincible Iron Man and Criminal. The first two I'd drop without any great reservations, the last one I'd stick with via trades.

back when i was doing my SSIA money got so tight towards the end that i pretty much dropped ALL my monthly books bar three or so. transformers, astonishing xmen and planetary. i dropped the rest when the last arc finished up (which looks to be a good thng after ultimates two finished up :) )

TF is pretty much all i collect on a monthly basis now as ive dropped astonishing -and planetary STILL isnt finish yet bar one issue- so when that comes out it'll be over too.

TBH the downturn isnt so much the reason as besides the fact i feel like im being ripped off to such a degree that ive sworn off using comic shops. i get trades off play.com now as its much cheaper. ive been following the avengers books that way and get the odd xmen book if the story idea grips me. im probably going to get ellis's arc on astonishing as a trade, ditto for newuniversal 2. logistically its working out better too as i dont have to worry about what book i need for which story when theres a crossover involved as it all ends up in order in the cheaper trade anyway.

i get the TF books posted to me off a guy in england and even with the exchange rate and postage cost its STILL cheaper than going into forbiden planet. for instance the last two books i got off him was all hail megatron 3 and spotlight sideswipe. i never SEEN the former as it sold out so quick and the latter had been ordered so lowly all that was left was a retailer incentive cover they were flogging for 11.99 euro.

i got both on line for 8.45 FFS and he was flogging the retailer one for cover price of the normal one !

sub city dont order the book at all. i know some people will say "set up an order" but im sorry its not MY responsibilty to look after the retailer and if they wont support a book feck em. why should i when im paying more anyway and the bloke on line is not only cheaper he's offsetting part of the postage cost for me because im outside his country- to be paid at a future time of MY choosing ?

its been a REAL eyeopener to be actually treated like a valued customer instead of a wallet.

that bloke is pretty much the ONLY reason im still getting a monthly as if not for him it'd be trade all the way.

Same as a few people I have not yet but I have been thinking about it. I am still getting Spider-man on a weekly basis but have not read it in about 3 months. Not because I felt it was bad I just have not had the time to sit down and start them.

I think it is hard to pick where to start when it comes to cutting titles, it would have been Young X-men but the latest issue seemed to pick up slightly from the initial drwadful arc. Uncanny X-men seems to be getting better after Brubakers so-so initial storylines. X-Factor is probably the best X-title at the moment which leaves me with Avengers...but I am also enjoying them right now. I guess I will just stop picking up the trades for a while and hope that it doesn't come to cutting anything from the list.

No, don't get any weekly/monthly comics. Pick up graphic novels generally and overall I'd say I haven't cut down.

If you can read this, you're too close!
