"Angry liver"?

Just saw a kid in emergency department last night.

I was asking about his medical history, when the family said he has "angry liver".

Apparently the GP diagnosed this when the kid presented with increased bruising. Didn't measure platelets, or look at clotting. Just made the diagnosis very quickly.

Has anyone any idea what angry liver is?

    I've never heard of it.

    I'm stumped

never heard of it. Is english the first language of the family? Could be a mistranslation somewhere along the line of an inflamed liver or somesuch? My gp likes to call my psoriasis angry when it's inflamed too.

English is their first language. Well educated middle class family.

I've no idea what's going on. But I've sent off the platelet count, coag screen and LTTs :P

I'll have egg on my face if the blood film reads "consistent with angry liver" though :P

I saw a kid with this while in doing an elective the ED in Australia this summer. He was of Chinese descent - apparently it follows some Chinese or alternative medical theory called the "lived-in body" or something. It's basically some bull**** along the lines of Feng Shui or something - but it's quite prevalent in East Asian cultures, at least according to one of the consultants over there who'd heard of it before.

Don't think I'd go ordering a liver biopsy anytime soon though. :D

Maybe a liver personality assessment would be more in order...

    Smells like CAM. Ew.

I've heard the term used in chiropractic and acupuncture I think. Here's a wonderful link full of absolute rubbish:
