    Howdy,

Has anyone been? I'm currently thinking of going next year and spending a few weeks in Brazil around that time. Would anyone have any recommendations? I've heard Rio can be quite rough so just a bit wary about visiting around that time too..

I was at carnaval in Rio last year, stayed in Copacabana. To be honest, it seemed more safe at carnaval than any other time. There are bloc parties everywhere around Ipanema and Copacabana, so lots of people around on the roads and the beaches. Also very visible security, I felt very safe. I would recommend staying in the beach areas as otherwise you will miss out on all the spontaneous parties. However accomodation you'll find on the net so super expensive, I paid through the nose prebooking a hostel and the price doubled when I got there. Great craic though, thoroughly recommend it.

I thoroughly recommend experiencing the Carnaval in the northeast city of Recife. There are three big Carnaval parties in Brazil. Rio being the biggest and most famous. Then you have the Salvador one and then the Recife/Olinda Carnaval which does not have restrictive blocos the way Rio & Salvador do. There doesn't seem to be much organisation and if your thing is chaos and madness while partying then go to Recife/Olinda and you won't be disappointed.

    Hello

I have been to Rio de Janeiro before and I recomend to visit Lebron and Barra da Tijura beach. I had a good time there.
As all biggest cities, dont walk alone on the beach at night. Keep your wallet in your undewear.

    :D

    thats it

I got mugged one evening on Copacabana beach. Don't carry anything too valuable, just enough money for the night maybe. I didn't get hurt but he had a knife and wanted money, watch, ring, etc.

Don't buy drugs off the whores either. If you do, make sure to have money to pay the bribe to the police.;)
