It's been mentioned a few times over the past while, so I just wanted to firm up the plans for a few well-deserved post-marathon beers next Monday. Who's up for it?

Am going to suggest Mahaffy's on the corner of Pearse Street and Townsend Street. You'll pass it in the final mile of the race, as you swing round from Westland Row onto Pearse Street (you'll also pass it in the first mile of the race as you go along Pearse Street). Open to suggestions if anyone has a better one.

Those who went to Trinity will know the pub quite well. Has recently been renovated.

Yeah I'm in...staying on Sir John's Quay so close enough (subject to being in any condition to attend!)

If those of you going for the sub-3 time could get there quickly after the finish and be ready to hand out pints to the rest of us as we go past the second time. ;)

what time are we talking about for these pints? is it a case of go home, shower and come back in or meet straight after for a liquid lunch.....to be honest, i could go for one straight after but i can think of better ways to recover from a marathon than an afternoon drinkng session.

I'll be there, will be waiting on a few people around the 4:30 mark, trying to use this as my long runnext week, and looking to find the best run to make up a 13 miles and meet up with people at a few different points.

I'll be there but as said already is it straight after or home first and shower

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

Well if we go straight there then those doing sub-3 will probably be wasted before the rest of us even get to the finish line, but if we go home and come back in the I think I may be liable to just collapse on the floor as soon as I walk out of the shower and then not move for a day.

Home, shower and then drinks Im thinking...........
Woddle you should set up a poll so we can see which the majority would prefer!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,608 ✭✭✭donothoponpop

I'll be up for a couple of swift ales and some marathon story swapping. I presume this is immediately post-race; can't see it working after a shower break etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,558 ✭✭✭Peckham

Am fortunate enough to have access to a shower nearby, so it will be post-shower for me...but would hope to be in pub pretty pronto...however feel free to show up in sweaty running gear!

I think I'd actually be more likely to go straight from the finish as well. Just have people turning up for one, or more, as and when they make it there.

Needs one of the mods to add a poll though.

I had visions of turning it into a good night, where I can get locked and share war wounds with people who care and appreciate the efforts :o I've asked a few friends into town for that night aswell

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,492 ✭✭✭Woddle

I would prefer to go home and shower and have a bit of grub, and then come back into town and celebrate, I did this in Berlin and the pub was packed with marathon runners, the vibe was excellent, so have your vote

Deffo cold bath, shower, food, food, food and more food and then drink.

I went for the Atari Jaguar option. :D

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

    Can't we do both? :D

Straight to drinks for an hour or so, home for shower and food and back for more drink. Best of both worlds.

I plan to find Dario's girlfriend, steal his Guinness and sausage sambo, grab a shower, and have more beer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,411 ✭✭✭SUNGOD

im in hotel reasonably close by so its shower/grub and then pub

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,238 ✭✭✭Abhainn

Great idea. Looks like the can of instant shower for me. Or maybe an auld splash of water in the mens jacks.

Makes it all a bit more of a challenge for everyone, first one to run 26 miles and then locate the sausage sambo wins. :D

Once I dont have to climb many/any stairs to get back to friend's apartment and then back to the pub them im on for shower first then pub!!!

I have to say that with the best will in the world a lot of people make it home and just crash - schlepping back into town on tired legs takes a LOT of effort!

I'll be in a pub straight after because I need to get a train back to Limerick that night (dam kids!) but will be there for a couple of beers and a war story or three. There is usually a RunnersWorld gathering as well for those of us who straddle both worlds - is there any interest in merging the two?

What? With a bunch of online running nerds from the runnersworld.co.uk forum?! ;)

Might be a good idea - think they're going to Lincoln Inn?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,608 ✭✭✭donothoponpop

Since quite a few people seem to want to go home and then meet up later, perhaps its a good idea for those going immediately postrace to meet up with the runnersworld group too- the more the merrier! I wouldn't mind Lincoln Inn either, being closer to the finish!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭uglyjohn

interesting amadeus...i can imagine myself conking out but after so long (pretty much) off the booze i am definatly having a few on monday so i think my will power can overcome common sense.

(if i can run 26 miles for a cup of water and a tinfoil blanket, im pretty sure i can sit on the dart for ten minutes to get a rake of pints)

the problem i have with meeting straight after is that everyone will come in in drips and drabs over a 2 hour period. people will be sweaty and tired and feel dirty. we'll have to carry around running gear and clothes to go home in (dont want to sit all day in wet shorts+tshirt getting pissed, then leave that night when its cold and dark to limp to the bus stop)

we deff should do something though, even if its just for the sake of boards AC to put faces and real names to the usernames. if we dont strike while the hammer is hard and do something about it; it might be hard to get started.

so, if people are meeting straight after, i'll pop in and have one, if people are meeting later ill come back in for a few. i'd rather come back in.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

As we'll all be finishing at various times over several hours as already said then anyone who want's to turns up straight after and has a pint to refresh themselves for the trip home. Those who are staying in hotels nearby can then hold the fort all day, and then the rest of us head home, get some fodder and change of attire, and then head back in later on.

And if we go to the same place as RunnersWorld are heading to then we can keep all of the internet wierdos together.

If still wearing your smelly running kit in the pub then you can get away with keeping your medal on, would probably look a bit daft once you've got a change of clothes if you then put the medal on as well though.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you but just in case you get carried away with the excitment of it all will everybody please REHYDRATE properly and EAT something before hitting the booze.

I'm all for the post-marathon beers but it's important to have resupplied the body with water, salts and carbs (and a bit of protein wouldn't go astray) before demolishing the brain cells.

Great idea --amadeus--! Also, I'm driving up from Limerick staying in Jurys and heading back to Limerick after the run (and a few beers/nosh... OH driving back :)) if you want a lift instead?

Marie C too... if you need a lift.

Is that Juries in Parnell street? If so that's where I'm staying too! Maybe we could double up on the trip there and back and split the petrol / parking costs. Be nice to have some company, share a taxi to the expo, etc :D

I'll go on teh RW thread and invite the main organising bod to show his face over here...

Wonder if we would be best to encourage Runners World crowd to Mahaffy's. Lincoln Inn (which I think they're talking about) is pokey at the best of times, will be rammed on day of marathon?

The fashion police will have to try and pry the medal from my cold dead hands.. I'll take it off, when I win the next one.

I'm leaving the kids with thier grandad so I can't leave too early on Sunday (herself is overseas for a couple of weeks) but we can always meet in Dublin if we don't shae a lift on the way there. No word from Marie on how she is getting up?

The RunnersWorld crowd are drinking in Kennedy's again this year btw.

lol, there is also the finishers tee-shirt so don't worry, you'll be instantly recognisable as someone who has done a marathon by
    1. medal
    2. teeshirt
    3. inability to walk properly
    4. inability to drink properly (alcohol that is)
    5. post marathon "glow" (a bit like a postcoital glow but with more saline caked onto your face)

Also in Jurys Parnell Street. What time suits you Sunday, I'm having a lie in. Just need to get up before the expo closes.

JUST NOTICED THAT MAHAFFEY'S IS NO LONGER CALLED MAHAFFEY'S!

Can't remember the new name, but will post it here later when I check it out again. Directions still the same though, corner of Lombard Street and Pearse Street...you'll see it twice during the marathon....

Ahh, I know it. I was there a few weeks ago for a couple of beers..
    The Lombard, is it? website.

Yep, it's now called the Lombard and is a much nicer place than Mahaffy's used to be. And for those who are sticklers for directions, it's on the corner of Pearse St and Lombard St, across the road from Pearse DART station...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 918 ✭✭✭MarieC

So are we going to the Lombard after so?? Is that confirmed?

I might try to stick my head in there before going home to shower, and when I come back in to town later.

Question: How will we distinguish Boards people from other people?????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

I'll possibly be the only person in Dublin still suffering from taper madness on Monday afternoon :-) easily recognisable.

Was going to suggest the first one to arrive should bring a piece of paper with "Boards AC" written/printed on it and attach it in the area where they're standing. Not sure who's going to be first in though...I'm showering first, although in the vicinity of the pub, so should be there by 1.30pm (all going to plan!), although others going direct from finish line may be there before me.

Sure, I'll bring a "Boards AC" sign and will hold it up/attach it somewhere. Look out for me at 1.30 (hopefully!).
