There's a nice one called the Dorchester, or another good one called the Ritz I believe, although they may be a bit pricey :D

Your best bet is to try something like lastminute.com and see what offers they have, most of the hotels are pretty much the same tbh, unless you have a lot more money than I do. Be careful to check the locations carefully as you may end up on the north cirular or at heathrow as there are a lot of offers at weekends for slightly out of town hotels. If you stay in Central london, Oxford Street/Regent Street is easy enough to get to by Tube. As is Bond Street, which is far more impressive, if you have the money.

Why Oxford Street out of curiosity? I hate the place, although my missus loves the Top Shop mega store there.

I usually stay in either jurys great Russell street (near tottenham court road) or jurys cliften ford (off Oxford at). What I do is book a room on either the jurys website or www.londontown.com - making sure I can cancel up to the day of arrvial. Then the night before they have usually dropped the last minute Internet saver rate - I then book that and cancel the original booking. Usually get a room for less than £100.

That is a very cunning plan.:)

It really is in need of a spuce up, I know their are major changes planned for the East of Oxford street(Oxford Circus-Centre Point) and the area opposite Selfridges, looks quite good but really is badly needed.

As for hotel, as long as you are in Zone 1-2, Oxfore street is close, I would go for South Kensington area, near Knightsbridge, Oxford street is less than 20 mins by tube. Holiday Inn Kensington Forum (4*)is a higher standard than your average Holiday Inn, perfect location, direct 40 mins by tube to Heathrow.
