Best Broadband?

Have Clearwire. The top package. Its shocking, Ipoker goes down all the time, its not cheap (€40 a month) and they didnt give us a router!

This weekend was the final straw, I worked out that the disconnecting cost me roughly €800. Im getting rid of it this week.

What is the best broadband service out there?

Also anyone else have any problems with Clearwire?

Get NTL or some kind of DSL provider like Eircom or BT. Copper is so much better and more reliable than wireless that there is no comparison. If you are playing a lot of poker at mid stakes a reliable broadband connection is a must.

I've NTL and it is very very good, really fast at 20Mb, not really sure how much it costs, probably around 40-50 a month.
I use it 8-10 hours a week for online poker on pokerstars, full tilt, Everest, Ipoker and the only one I ever have a problem with is ipoker but this is probably an ipoker problem rather than NTL

I have nothing good to say about NTL customer service wise. I will say that their BB is excellent though. Just hope that you dont run into any problems (I never have - touch wood)

eircom does the job for me rory

I use NTL (UPC) internet. I have 20Mb line wth them iPoker flies!!!
I have irishBoradband too and iPoker looses connection with the server all the time.. I also used to have on top of all these eircom and it worked perfect

I think UPC as has a plan for 10Mb or 12Mb. I think that is very good one, their interent is brilliand. Their custmer service is not the best but you dont realy need to speak with them much... Clear wire is not for poker. I would not trust a wireless conneciton for playing poker with

UPC is pretty damn good. Magnet is also good. Either of those.

Just wanted to say that Magnet has somespecial caching on their site and sometimes you might get issues with loading pages if page changed content... I had Magnet in one of our offices and .. sorry cannt say they are good

I use eircom as they were the only provider available where I live in the country.. I have their 3 mb line and it is perfect for poker ./.. would like it a little faster for downloads but it's fine...

anyone know if this imagine one I hear advertised as the "same" as eircom can be got if I already have eircom?

Has anybody played a significant amount of poker on one of the mobile internet packages ( like o2 or vodafone )?

Check posts about clearwire on boards. They're useless.Get rid of them and pay them nothing for breaking the contract. They're the biggest chancers going.

If you can get NTL (UPC) in your area i would defo advise you to get there package their BB is fantastic, customer service side can be atrocious but its a good service so very rarely have to contact them.

There 20meg service is €40 a month and their 10meg service is €30 if you are gonna be just using it for poker id get the 10meg but if you do any downloading etc etc id get the 20meg its savage!

why dont u check the broadband forum `_`

Neways 3G ( mobile ) totally depends on your location but i found vodafones service to be really reliable ( tallaght area )

If you want my advice advoid NTL and go with a 3MB DSL connection if you can get it.

Ripwave, Clearwire etc etc are to be 100% advoided.

BTs billing is a disaster , NTLs customer support is non existent.

If you want the most stable connection get smart or if your really lucky get a fibre connection such as magnet.

Im on Eircon 3MB and never get disconnected from poker clients, even ipoker

It just cuts out too much or what? I have eircom at home and have no intention of changing that (or at least not for something that doesn't involve wires), but I would be interested in something with the same coverage as a mobile.

3G isnt the same network you pick up on a standard mobile phone.

2G/GPRS/EDGE would not sustain a smooth and reliable service with poker clients

3G is a limited network and many parts of ireland dont have it, especially remote areas

cheers nuxxx. So I'm sitting somewhere and I'm getting a reasonable 3G signal (lets say the equiv of half the signal bar on a mobile). I'm not moving around. Am I going to get virtually 0 packet loss here or is it more finicky than that? I'd be getting something like this mainly for poker, and disconnect folding 1 in 1000 hands wouldn't be acceptable (for example).

I agree with this endorsement of NTL Broadband. Ive sampled quite a few and NTL= the nuts.

I use BT (up north) and it's completely top notch, it's expensive especially compared to competitors but I run a wireless network at home with absolutely no hiccups!

Rob introduced me to the whole 'broadband in a box' thing - we don't have it up here. He has Clearwire and Irish Broadband. Irish Broadband doesn't work with a router, it is designed to be only used buy a sole ethernet connection and will cut out if the connection is shared. Clearwire can be used by multiple users but I find the signal drops occasionally which is the very thing you're trying to avoid.

IMO any land based internet connection will always be superior to any broadband in a box. I would expect BT and Eircom phone lines to be the best transporter for the highest speed connections. NTL were pants up here but they seem to have cleaned up their act of late and their connection is much quicker and more reliable nowadays.

What I would suggest is that you phone all 3, compare price and maximum speed as the area you live in will dictate what speed of connection they can offer you.

Okay, so people are pretty negative about the 3G networks. Shame, seems like a nice idea.

Because i live in the sticks i cant get real broadband, i have Clearwire and never have any problems, mainly because i think im the only person in Wexford who has it.
