I'm a lurker, though I askled awhile ago about buying a Nikon DSLR. I bought a Nikon d80 with 18-70mm and 70-300mm last night on ebay (from Hong Kong) :D and now I have to wait until it comes. I'm so excited and already feeling bad for my outdated coolpix... I'll never look at it in the same way again. I've only ever had two good cameras in my life (a pentax film camera and the coolpix)so this is a big deal...

As I rarely shop online, I didn't think of this agonising wait...has anyone else experienced this?

What was the first photo you took with a new camera?

    I'm such a child...

Good luck with your new purchase butterbear - while the new one will be the dogs by comparison i suspect the coolpix will hold a wee softspot in your heart.

Have you your Fedex (or other courier) pickup sorted? You need to have someone on the doorstep. The only thing worse than waiting for it to arrive is to see it being returned after a number of tries to deliver. ;) (only joking!)

Are the Hong Kong cameras libel to customs charges?

Any camera coming from outside the EU is likely to attract custom charges unless they happen to miss it or its marked as gift

marking as a gift doesn't really matter as gifts are also liable for VAT/duty

Aye, thought as much. I got 20% or so added to a €50 order of t-shirts from the US a couple of weeks ago which was marked as a gift. I reckon in the current climate there would be less change of getting away with importing without paying VAT, and i'd say they have been told to tighten up on charges.

I've been hit the last twice I've ordered something substantial from the Far East.

Fed Ex are harassing me about a watch I got from Singapore in June, and got an invoice this morning from DHL about a lens (Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 :)) I only received yesterday from Hong Kong!

Both were labeled as 'gifts'. Methinks the days of slipping through items are well and truly numbered.

@ Butterbear - my lens from HK only took 3 days - here's hoping yours is as quick!

You keep used nappies in your fridge?

I was supposed to be charged VAT for a Pentax 35mm F/2 that I bought from the states about 18 months ago.
They left a bill, which I didn't get until weeks afterwards, but never chased me on it.

That's the spirit - hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I know it can be tough waiting on the new baby to arrive, but it'll be there before you know it =)

    Enjoy!

    Peter
