quality of counterfeit dvd's

I was reading about counterfeit dvd's of new movies being sold at as little as 3 euro. Some are shot from a person in the cinema.

My question is just a curiosity and that is such a counterfeit could not be very good quality could it? I am not advoacting purchase of copies/illegal activity and in any case I buy my dvds as quality is important to me. I just do not understand people paying money for bad quality dvd and then possibly playing them on a very expensive tv.

I could be wrong as I don't know about counterfeits but it struck me as pointless

Its crazy when you can get perfect dvd quality off the net for free :p

CAM copies. i.e - ones shot from the back of the cinema can be very bad quality, yes. Sometimes however thats preferable to having to tolerate the actual cinema itself with the loud skangers and overpriced tickets and foodstuffs.

There are also counterfeits that are just copies of the DVD's themselves which are pretty much the same quality as the DVD itself. These being sold at about E3 a piece would tempt a lot of people to buy the copies as opposed to paying E15+ in a shop or online for the same film.

not as good tho for some one who enjoys a good experience?

CAMs-Usually first, can be poor-watchable depending on source, can hear audience makeing noise if cinema fairly full
Telesyncs-Usually decent cam video with direct audio, these can range from poor to fairly watchable, due to sometimes having very good audio
Screeners-Usually decent quality, leaked by various sources and can range from poor to very good, screeners sometimes have watermarks, black and white scenes, which may distrupt viewing
Workprints-Usually like a unpolished screener, may have watermarks and generally a tcr marking throughout
Region 5-Some distributers make a Russian DVD release early due to piracy being huge over there, these are usually like a good dvd source and have direct audio, a good R5 should be very good quality and indistinguishable from a DVD in some cases
DVD Rip-The DVD is ripped straight from a english DVD source, this will mimic retail dvd quality if done right

Here is a sorta timeline on how releases might get released, usually starts from cam to Telesync etc... Most pirate dvds being sold for profit are possibly CAMs (As CAM usually comes first) so quality wont be perfect, over time well before DVD Retail though better copies can appear :)

    Hope this helps

    Nick

Its a lottery, for cinema releases its sometimes good, sometimes bad.

R5 is what you look for.

Identical in some cases. Plus if you buy really good counterfeits the box and DVD itself can look identical to the originals.

    R5?

    Region 5
They're released in places like Russia shortly after the film is released in the cinema, they're usually almost as good as the final DVD release will be, but without some of the post processing stuff done.
Think they were supposed to be a method of fighting piracy in those regions, but they just ended up making things easier for the rest of the world:P

I went to the cinema the weekend.

I bought a few jellies for myself from the pick'n'mix.

    They cost me €10.55:eek::eek::eek:

I bought a bottle of water.

    It cost me €2.50:eek::eek::eek:

Total cost of a trip to the pictures for one: €23.05....now that is criminal....I cringe at the thought of people who have to bring kids to the pictures.

When you consider you could own the film for a third of what a few fvcking jellies cost in the pictures it does not surprise me people go this route.

Having said that the quality of these things is really horrible and I could never watch one myself. (CAM's and Telesyncs's that is ;))

Abroad some of the "DVD Shops" (i.e. Pirate industries) are actually run properly with good customer service and everything :D And quality is perfect to boot!

Of course I would know nothing of this - friend of a friend of a friend of an aunt ;)

I sometimes stop at a spar on my way to the movies ,get some snacks there.
You pay for your admission ,that should be enough.:)

    Cineworld Unlimited card = €15 a month
A bottle of water and 2 packs of jellies from tesco = €1.55

pretty darn cheap depending on how many films you see a month. of course not all of us are close to cineworld but as long as you buy your food elsewhere before you go in it's not too bad.

Having said that cinema tickets themselves can be pretty expensive (€6 - 8 and thats if your a student). I've seen 5 films so far this month with unlimited though so i've more than got my moneys worth :D

Not for a number of year it isn't.
Was more then that 2 years ago and it's now 20 per month.
    Still good value though.

While it is unfortunate that sometimes we get chucked in a room with people we wouldnt normally sit in a darkened room with at the Cinema, NOTHING beats the experience of watching a good film in a good cinema.

As for pricey food....DONT BUY IT!

On the piracy issue, DVD's come down in price rapidly now, and films that have been out for around six months can be picked up for a tenner (sorry im working in sterling here 12-13 Euro?) and by the time they are out for a year they can be bought for anything from 2-7 quid (you do the math!).

WHen theyre that cheap, why not buy the real thing?

Exactly, you'd be crazy to pay full price for a new dvd, as it's inevitable that its gonna be a hell of a lot cheaper in some cases 1 - 2 months later. HMV are always adding new stuff to their 3 for €25 sale that comes around a few times a year

Never bought a counterfeit DVD and never will. Not a holier than thou attitude but it's just not good value
For new releases there is a Cineworld card or download (not that I condone that sort of thing!)

And tbh, stroll into xtravision and there are hundreds of great DVD's to choose for 3 for 20 euro. And great deals on box sets over on play.com.

I wouldn't be bothered buying a counterfeit DVD when you've no idea of the quality and it's not like DVD's are expensive anyway.
They are expensive on release but give it a few months and they're very cheap
