A 32 County Drive

Right so through general boredom I got to thinking if you were to drive through all 32 Counties in one go (something i've been considering trying), how long would it take and also what would be the best route to take ?

So how long would it take to drive through all 32 Counties ?
    Criteria -
You dont have to visit the main cities, just pass the border of the county
Presuming you keep to the general speed limit
    Factor in stops for food/petrol

What would be the best route to take (County Wise or Detailed, up to you) ?
    Criteria -
You must start from Waterford City.
You must pass through all Counties at some stage.
You must finish in Waterford City.

    County Map for Reference

I would be thinking up the west coast, around the North, and back down the east coast zig-zagging to hit counties as required hitting Kilkenny last and then back into Waterford.

Time wise ... I dont have a notion. Would surely take 24 Hours plus i'd say, maybe around 36 ?

Day and a half or two days I'd say ya could do it in. It'd be possible in 24 hours I'd say, if ya were arsed.

Just looking on Youtube. That show "I Dare Ya" tried this one in 24 hours, they hit 30 Counties in that space of time. I'd say with a bit of luck and low traffic its probably possible.

Well, thanks for that eloquent piece of advice, is there any particular reason you think it's not worth my while or are you just hungover this morning ?

I've thought about doing it many times. Seeming as I have this week off I might just do it. That's how bored I will be.

Dublin to Dublin can be done in less than 24 hours!

These guys here did a geocache in each county in 22:57 hours.
There is some info on the trip here:

    http://forums.geocachingireland.com/viewtopic.php?t=976

If you plan it well I think Waterford to Waterford can also be done in 24 hours.

Me and one of the lads were looking at driving around the perimiter of Ireland. Probably will never bother doing it but it could be fun.

You'd want to kill yourselves by the time you hit kerry. great view but driving around all those heads will drive you mental.

Youre right: screw Galway! (oh wait i see)

Looks like a bank holiday weekend unless you want to do a pure 24 hour run.

i think you would easily do it in 24 hours, the trick is to hit places where there is as the brendan shine song says where 3 counties meet ie Cloonfad in the west Gal ,ros mayo
    bellek in donegal /fermanagh leitrim

also will you take a photo of signs welcoming you into the county ect

good luck if you want any help in the west driving i would help you out

If I could thank you more than once for that map I would. Thats almost identical to the one I drew up myself. I'm thinking its the best way to go.

Yeah theres a place down near waterford called the Vee that is the meeting point of Tipp, Waterford and Cork too. The map goes through it I think.

I wont be home until just before Xmas so I think i'm definately going to give this a shot then. I'm thinking about the 29th of December. Ill have light traffic on my side but the roads will be worse and I wont have as much sunlight.

Ill see if I can recruit one of the lads or the brother to do it with me. If not ill go on my own.

you probably couldn't pick a worse possible time to be honest. Just wait until you can give it a shot sometime in Spring or Summer. Anyway if you want to set a record you'll be wanting the best conditions not the worst.

Probably, with the weather and everything. I tend to get bored around the time between xmas and new years though. Ill just have to wait and play it by ear I suppose.

Uh huh. You'll take half a step out the front door that morning before heading back inside to toast your innards with a bottle of whiskey.

Did this last Paddy's/Easter Week with the missus. That was the week where Paddy's Day was the Monday and Good Friday was the... erm... Friday, I suppose. We stopped in B+B's every night after about 8/9hrs driving and skipped the very Eastern Coast of the North. Still got most of it though.

Dublin to Dublin in exactly a week. We stayed two nights in Wexford 'cause my folks have a house there and two in Donegal 'cause her Granny's from there.

We were going to scenic route though. She's an Aussie and hadn't seen much outside of Dublin. It was a deadly week and I even found Leitrim - although I think it may have been part of Sligo and they lied to me.

You could to the 26 counties in 24 hours for sure. Nobody cares about the other 6 because they're not Irish.

anyone actually doing/done this at the weekend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 471 ✭✭Clytus

years ago I set out on a Sunday morning of a bank Holiday and drove to Dundalk...then cross country to Galway then down to Limerick...onto Cork up the coast to Waterford then Wexford and Dublin....did it all in 15 hours.....and what a load of balls it was too.

On the bit from Limerick to cork I coped on it was just a crap idea and I was getting tired.

by the time |i got back to dublin I was totally bolloxed....and pissed off.

It sounds like a good idea in theory, but driving for 24+ hours straight doesn't appeal to me. After being awake for long, I'm guessing it'd get pretty unsafe. Besides, all you'd see is feckin roads. It'd be good fun to do it in a couple of weeks though, there's so much of Ireland that I've never seen, especially up North.

I did it from Galway to Galway a few years ago over two weekends with no car tax ( it was out for a few months)Managed it without getting caught.:D

I was planning on doing it.. Try hit every major town/city in every county though. Make it worth the while. You could do it over a week, rent a campervan and enjoy the trip. I'll also be leaving from Waterford, so let me know what route you take. I think I've been to all the counties at this point.. Even Roscommon!

Roscommon doesn't exist. Its a story made up by your parents to scare you, like the boogeyman, Satan, and Snyper.

Well considering where I live at the moment petrol is slightly less than E0.20 per liter I wont mind spending some on it when i'm home.
