Cross Promotion on RTE

This week Gerry Ryans book was published, also this week we saw Ryan interviewed about his life and times (ie the contents of his book) on er Ryan Confidential by Ryan Tubridy, who merely had to keep the flow going. So Ryan who is employed by RTE is given a 30 min showcase on "prime time" TV by RTE to, in effect, promote his book.

Are they any rules about this sort of thing?

    Mike

There aren't but probably should be. The charge among many critics is that the Late Late has largely become an excercise in promoting RTÉ personalities books. There's a lot of truth in this.

How is it any different to say Gordon Ramsay promoting his book on Jonathan Ross last Friday?

Gordon Ramsay doesn't have any shows on BBC. AFAIK, all his shows were on ITV, or maybe C4 *shrug*

I know that. I fail to see how it is wrong for one person to go on a tv chat show to promote a book yet it is not ok for someone else.

I raised this issue with Charlie Bird's book a couple of years ago, and the promotion it got on Liveline (of all shows!)

As for Gerry Ryan, there is the oracle of the RTÉ Guide too.

But Ryan did appear on the opposition's breakfast show (Ian Dempsey on Today FM) last week too, so not complete whoredom by RTÉ.

They could cross promote their radio and tv services a bit better. its rare you see an ad for RTE TWO on RTE ONE or visaversa.

Given the current economic climate, there might be more promos to fill ad space!

In Plain Sight is one of the many preimetime shows that RTE show in the small hours of the morning, all I can say is thank god for sky+

but anyway, the ad breaks during In Plain Sight show only other programmes on RTE (as I whizz by at 30x )
