I was in Castle Court S/C today in Belfast and I popped into Argos and bought a £50 Bush SD Freesat receiver. I was asked my address for TV licencing and once I said that it was heading south, the assistant pulled out a folder and on the sheet it stated:

For ROI addresses on TV equipment use the following:

    Name: Mr SoutherIreland
    Address: ?? Main St
    Post Code BT11??

    Anybody else have this experience?

Im going to Armagh tomorrow to buy the Bush HD freesat and just reserved it on their site-after printing out the confirmation I put my own name above it wit an address in county armagh that I just picked out of the phone book,...I have done this quite a few times for Freeview boxes, but will ask tomorrow what is the policy in Armagh store just to see what they say.
will let you know tomorrow night if I havent drunk too much cheap beer from Sainsburys before I go on-line...lol:D

The people at that Armagh address better have a valid TV licence!

Well lads I got the Bush HD Freesat reciever today and gave my name and a made up address with proper postcode (ie..number 21 in a street where there is only 20 houses...hee hee)
I asked the girl in Argos if my brother in the south wanted one how would he work the address and she said that they just write your name and a local postcode but if anything goes wrong with the reciever there would be a problem returning it, but she then sais if they are (Argos) willing to do that, then Im sure they will stand by the product.
I also went in to Tesco in Monaghan and bought a 1.5m HDMI Philips lead for 2.50euro, and guess what?there was one with the Freesat reciever which was not staed on the website! In fact they were trying to get you to buy one for £9.99 and said that it only came with a scart lead...
I wont be setting it up until Monday - will let you know how it goes...
I have to go now as I believe the beer I bought in Sainsburys should be chilled enough now...cheers lads and lass's:)

Tis nothing o do wit freesat, I think, In UK they are meant to forward all names etc of TV equip purchase to TV licencing.

Here they just assume you should hve one for every address unless you prove otherwise..

Yep it's defiantly for the TV licence people, My wife's brother works for the company that get this info from the shops and passes it to the TV licence people. UK shops are not allowed to sell TV receiving equipment without getting a name and address.

    Hi Lads,
Well, Freesat HD up and running, but only after a small problem-the HDMI lead which came with it would not seem to work and "No Signal" kept appearing, I then thought I was going to have to go and move the dish slightly, but I didnt! I decided to try the Philips HDMI lead which I bought for 2.50euro in Tesco and hey presto.....Freesat HD...

One other little proplem is that if you are watching analog tv and then turn on the power on the Freesat reciever, it does'nt switch to the AV automatically, you have to do it manually and this can be a pain--it does it okay when I connected it with a scart lead just to try...but my dad will have to get used to it (even though Ive had 6 calls today asking,,how do you do this or that? )
He was watching the BBC HD preview all day and thought the picture was fab, and says he cant wait to see some footie in HD...one more satisfied customer (or parent..lol):D

Just a reminder to update the software on the freesat hd box via the menu options once up and running, it sorts out an issue with ITV HD via the red button.

    That is spot on.

I live beside the border with N.I. and have always bought TVs, DVD recorders/players, hi fi systems etc in the north.

You will always be asked for your address when buying a TV but just tell them that you live in the Republic of Ireland and thats it. No more questions asked.

Bought my Humax in Currys in Newry. No problem with post code requirement. Girl asked for post code - I said Dublin 13 - she typed in something, deal done.

    Hi Lads,
Just reserved another Bush Freesat Hd box in Argos in the north at £119, and they will give me £10 in gift vouchers because I am spending £100 or more. So anyone going up north to buy Freesat, HD or SD, make sure to reserve in on-line to avail of the offer (£5 voucher for £50 spent and sew on) but only if you resere it on-line....good viewing:D

I'm going to Enniskillen this evening if anyone wants me to pick one up for them. I have an address in Fermanagh, so no probs. Genuine replies only. No beer shall be collected ; )

Oops - looks like I won't be going now. I was looking for an outfit for a fancy dress and Argos in Enniskillen won't have it 'til Wednesday, which'll be too late. I won't be going now. Sorry

How do you pick up a signal for freesat in ROI? Is it through a dish?

Will be in UK next week and considering picking up a box in Argos. All things considered and I have a Full HD LCD TV - what box would you buy right now? I understand there are lipsync issues with some HD boxes. Given some HD boxes are 3 times the price of SD is it worth buying the HD one now?

wait for humax pvr version, available mid november.

Thanks Stanley1. That's rumoured to be about 299ukp when it is launched. I may wait a while for that one.

If I was buying a non PVR box now, is the Humax Hd worth the extra ukp30 over say the Bush?
