Blue Screen on Start Up

I have a Dell laptop, about 4.5 years old. Its been pretty reliable but I recently got the antivirus xp 08 virus which I think I removed successfully so Im not sure if this problem is related. When I start up I get a blue screen with the following info:

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

it asks to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed (I havent installed anything recently)
if the problem persists i should disable or remove any newly installed h/w or s/w and disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

    Technical information:

    ***STOP: (0x00000050 (0xFA13EC14, 0x00000000, 0xFA13EC14, 0x00000000)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Assuming XP:
Can you start in Safe Mode?

    To do this:
    Start your laptop from cold.
Keep tapping F8 until menu appears.
Select Safe Mode. Boot and test.
Let us know how you get on.

Few solutions, just depends on the OS. Need to find that out before I can assist.

Nope, it wont let me start in safe mode. on start up it gives me the option but if I select it still goes to the blue screen.

The solutions require you to be able to get into Safe Mode. If you are unable to, you should try repairing Windows. Boot from the XP CD and try repairing Windows. Its the only solution I can think of atm.

so what does "repairing Windows" involve? Once I go in there will i have any clue what to look for? This level of technicality scares me!

Is there no secret button I can press to make everything ok :)

I agree. If you can't even get into safe mode, your xp disc and its repair facility is all that is left for most users (beginners to middle skill users).

If you can't "F8" it at startup, and get into the restore function or do a complete re-installation from maybe a hidden section/drive, your relying on your bootup XP cd.

You can wait till see what other people suggest before doing a repair, and there is no guarntee it will resolve the issue. I just cant think of any other way of fixing the issue since we cant load windows to do the general solutions.

I have seen something similer to this before. It turned out to be a screensaver that antivirus xp2007 installed on the infected system. It also hid the tab for changing the screensaver. Check to see if you can change your screensaver as normal if you can more then likely not a screensaver. Hope this helps

if he is getting a blue screen at startup then he cant boot in to change the screensaver, a repair off the xp cd looks like the way forward

I'd agree that the only way forward is to re-install XP. Repair is possible, but would probably involve a LiveCD and require system and registry knowledge.

OP, have you all your important data safe? Given that it's a laptop, transferring the HHD to another PC won't be easily done, you may need a Linux boot-CD (I'm not sure whether the XP CD allows a non-destructive recovery).

True but i was seeing this as well, but what i forgot was that the blue screen would say that the system was rebooting after XX seconds and then carry on booting or go back to the desktop. But it was a joke screensaver that was installed on the system by antivirus xp2007. It took me a few hours to realise that it was a screensaver, It was only a suggestion for him to look and see. If it is a true BSoD then reinstall and XP or recover XP. But if it is a screensaver then he could lose a lot of data with a recovery or re installation.
