Are the rumours true that there is a public access computer room in the Arches under the rail bridge? I thought about going looking for them a couple of times last year but the scaffolding and hoardings from the building work put me off.

Old looking labs in there from the looks of it recently.

Abandoned looking even. They should do something with the space though to be honest.

Used to be where comp sci had their labs, prior to the prefabs iirc. Though I could be wrong on that one.

The Arches lab was wonderful - the PAC lab was in the last arch (i.e. closest to Pearse station) and was split-level - PCs downstairs, Macs (coloured first-gen iMacs!) upstairs). Normally about 30 degrees and the whole room shook when trains went over. It's gone a long time, though. I used it heavily in first year (as I commuted).

Ah I remember them the had old school blueberry imacs there. They were never used. Used to always get on there if I needed a computer

Sounds interesting- seeing as the building work in that area has seemingly ended, let's hope that space gets put to good use- any wishlists?

I would assume it is 30degrees from all the computer exhausts.

Some stupid ass express/cargo trains use that line at ungodly hours and there is also some stupid maintenance train that goes by slowly and loudly at 4 in the morning.

How long does a train take to pass... 3 mins at most?

That is still 57mins of study time an hour..

More like 5 seconds. It only annoyed me cause it kept waking me up when I was in Goldsmith, I can't imagine it would be massively detrimental to studying efforts.

For the time being though they seem intent on using that space for anything.

I'd rather put up with that than die when my train goes off the rusted, un-tamped rails and plunges me into the Lloyd :P

LG12 not be a better choice seeing as you have access ;)

well yes... now that I have my CS password sorted..
Presumably you'd have to stay in college if you were to use one of the rooms at 3am...

or have a 24hr study space for that matter.. since access is restricted after... what ever time they close the gates.......

does swipe access at that gate not end at a certain time.. or is that only swipe access in??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,297 ✭✭✭Ron DMC

College is fully locked down at midnight, all gates, swipes in and out. The only way in and out after 12 is front arch.

And on the topic of the abandoned labs, wouldn't it be cool if Walter Bishop got released from St. Jude's and repoened his lab to study all of his crazy experiments?

When I started in TCD in 98 I used to use that computer room on my way to lectures in the hamilton. I found it freezing cold in the mornings..

Also under one of the arches used to be the "bioresources centre" where they kept the rats and mice etc used for animal research. Very smelly. I don't know where it is now.
