Looking to get some work done in the house, and ive had three builders up so far, they all looked at the job, wrote down mesurments and told me they would come back to me in a day or two with a price....still waiting two/three weeks later !!

Everyone is saying "ah this is the best time to get the builders in, they are desperate for work"...not from what i can see:confused:

Have another bloke coming up tommrow to price it, just even wondering if he will ever come back with a price ???

    Anyone else having this peoblem?

    Bloody builders :P

Yes same problem! Everyone tells me that there is no problem getting a builder nowadays as they aren't busy - well I wish someone would tell me where they are because I can't get one!
Been trying to find someone to do my chimneys for a couple of years now. I had a few down looking at them and promised me they would get back - never did. The last person I had down sounded more hopeful than the rest, but he never contacted me since April and to be honest at this stage, I just don't care anymore!

Just give them a buzz back. Most are just lazy but you also have to think that if they are busy then they must have a good rep. Cowboys who have done years of bad work will probebly be quite - but do you really what them to do the job??

You will always wait for good people . in times like these they are kept busy while the not so good are laid off .

Now I am not saying this is universally true -rather it tends to be true Some very good people are laid off and some chancers remain busy .

Obtain references and wait for the good guys

Yeah that would be a fairly accurate description of the situation.

Someone said to me recently "the good are kept going and the bad are kept begging"

Houses, house extensions and renovations which were planned in past 6-12 months would be being built now. When these are completed, by the good builders, then some of theses guys will be looking for work.
Big drop in planning applications in mid-west.
Good plumbers, electricians and other tradespeople I know are exceptionally busy. That must change in next 6-9 months.
People like those who post here, may be putting off building till then. Wise move if you can wait.

I'm in the same boat, my father in law had the plans for our extension about 6 months before he got off his hole and gave me a quote and then his qoute was very expensive, IMO, which he knocked €30k off but its still too expensive.

I got another guy to qoute the same work, took him 6 weeks to get back to me and he has quoted €46k/€16k below FIL's qoutes.

I registered at tradesmen.ie last week and have had 5/6 guys contact me about the job and all have been up with me or requested copies of plans so I hope to have a few more prices within the next week or 2.

I'm in no rush to get it done and I know that work is slowing down for builders out there so I think I'll leave it for a few months or look at getting it done by direct labour.
