Pre-election Promises V. Reality

So come on people tell us what your local Politicians promised to deliver in the middle of last year as their airbrushed gobshíte faces smirked at you from every lampost in the land.

I live in Limerick and I have a staggering one for you here that was released via the local Media (The Limerick Post), not sure that the national press ever picked up on it - and I'm guessing that there were similar pre-election tales spun elsewhere too....

The Irish general election of 2007 took place on 24 May 2007.......

    Pre-election:
On the 24th of April 2007, weeks before polling day, Fianna Fail Deputy Peter Power promised to bring the people of Limerick a "Luas Service". This was greeted with raised eyebrows and scorn by the the thinking man; seeing as we have yet to get a proper bus service in Limerick.....

The Fianna Fail faithful and shrewd FF voters however roared loudly and ran amok in the streets like English soccer yobs, shaking their fists in peoples faces and kicking over bins - thrilled at yet another extraordinary Fianna Fail miracle.

    Post-election:
Well Peter is probably out there somewhere swinging that pick-axe and singing railroad songs.....but today, well over a year after polling day, Limerick still only has 3 bus routes, practically no bus shelters [despite 361 annual days rain] and a sparse 5 or 6 buses running so late that you couldn't rely on them for regular transport when it counts ie. getting to work etc.

In the meantime you can get the train from Limerick to 3 destinations: Cork, Dublin or am, where was it [?] Oh yeah, Ennis - that Metropolis. Also the train to Dublin costs ~€50, smells of urine and is frequently packed to twice the manufacturers capacity.

So what were you promised down your neck of the woods? Schools? Dedicated Cancer Units? Gardaí on the streets? A new by-pass? Cocaine toting Prostitutes?

    - Post the Fianna Fail pre-election promises here, we all need a bit of cheering up and a good laugh [:(]

Isn't there a politics forum for this kind of thing. In fairness AH is no place for serious debating

just to prove my point. Tits, fanny, Pedo Bear. I'm like so random!

So, how many Limerickonians actually thought, "Yep. We could use a Luas. Fianna Fail are an organisation of their word, so I'll vote for them and we'll have it a a few years" when they voted?

    You got what you deserved.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

politicians should be legally liable for election promises
if it's shown that they could not be implimented then it's electral fraud

if it's shown they could have implimented them but choose not then it's breach of contract

otherwise they need disclaimers / warnings like cigarette packets

About 16 planning applications for bus shelters came into the Planning Dept. of Limerick City towards the end of August.

A lot of them are gone to FI though so it could be +6 months before they start appearing.

Also AH is not the place for this, it is a silly place.

A kind of "Contract for Ireland" kind of thing?

In all fairness Bus Eireann do a pretty good job over there in Limerick. I traveled over by bus to Lahinch one bank holiday weekend in the summer with a few friends, not a single problem....the only truly efficient service in the country.

    Everything ran perfectly on time

It was obvious before the election that spending was out of control and there was something unsavory around the corner. If you didn't see this, you were stupid. If you did see this and voted for FF anyway, you were even more stupid.

This negates the purpose of this thread. If you believed the promises against the backdrop of what I pointed out above, you were the most stupid of all.

So you can't complain that promises weren't kept, because if you actually believed that those promises could be kept, then there was something wrong with you...

The Green's promised to provide free broadband to pensioners as part of the household benefits package, a promise which disappeared from their website after Ryan got the job as comms minister.

Still, I guess it will be cheaper to do it next term, with less pensioners about !!

But the nice man from FF had such a lovely smile and said I'd be looked after. Why would he lie to me? :(

No offence Mark200, but if Lahinch was in Limerick instead of the coast of Co. Clare [?] then the place wouldn't be such a bleak, grey, miserable hole of a place. I do understand that a lot of Limerick's inbred go there a lot to eat chips and assault people - so don't feel bad about the confusion.

    - Anyway your example is crap on dozens of other levels too [sorry] so I'm just going to ignore it. The fact remains that only masochists, ardent traffic-watching fans, and those that live for standing patiently in the rain can tolerate Limericks woeful bus service.

I wasn't using that as an example to contradict criticism of the bus services over there, since Bus Eireann is more a national service than anything.....
I was just saying that Bus Eireann are doing a good job, and that includes in Limerick

And I'm well aware Lahinch is in Co Clare, but we had to get a bus to Limerick and then a bus from there to Lahinch, and I was impressed by the amount of activity at the bus station in Limerick.

Ah it doesn't matter much to me anyway. Once my money from the deposed Prince Ogbaduwah Masawayla hits my account, I'm out of this recession.

:( Do you mean it was all lies?

Actually - do ye all remember some gobshíte was talking about Ireland hosting the Olympics in the near future??? We can't even have the odd GAA match without traffic being at a standstill for a 60 mile radius over a period of 3-4 hours......
