    well, it broke

    http://science.slashdot.org/science/08/10/16/2344208.shtml
"From the fresh press release: 'Investigations at CERN following a large helium leak into sector 3-4 of the Large Hadron Collider tunnel have confirmed that cause of the incident was a faulty electrical connection between two of the accelerator's magnets. This resulted in mechanical damage and release of helium from the magnet cold mass into the tunnel. Proper safety procedures were in force, the safety systems performed as expected, and no one was put at risk. Sufficient spare components are in hand to ensure that the LHC is able to restart in 2009, and measures to prevent a similar incident in the future are being put in place.'"

cue people telling us its a sign and were all gonna die in 2009

    Finally, something interesting on AH.
    SCIENCE!

Now how long before someone pollutes it with rubbish about recessions, paedophiles, the budget, banks or other such tripe?

Something was bound to break at some stage anyway. If they had that at the next Toy's For Big Boys then i might go. And if it kills us all so what? How would you like to die?

    1. Death by malnutrition
    2. Death by involtary bowel movements (use your imagination)
    3. Death by Large Hadron Collider

I know what sounds cooler anyway.

Not quite terragen mists but surely at least one of the scientists/cleaners/maintenance types is now superpowered.

Collision of that energy level happen regularly in the atmosphere. Much more interesting is how and why its possible to create such a rumour and have millions get concerned about it. It speaks to a huuuuge knowledge gap between reasonably educated people and the frontiers of science or even the accepted state of physics.

Oh man the Daily Wail....its unethical to classify any of their "science stories" as "scientific"

They obviously knew the recession was coming and tried to save a few bob on the magnet connections :D

Ok, now tie in paedophiles to this for the win.

Remember, your E-Fame is riding on this...

LHC closed after Paedophile caught trying to ahem.."Violate" the inner beam pipe of the LHC.

This is actually pretty old news too.

The fault occurred about a week into operation.

It had nothing to do with the paedophiles, it was them fordiners what did it, taking all our jawbs at the LHC, and then fitting shoddy connections. Cowboys Ted, Cowboys!
