Upgrading PSP Firmware

I have been asked how to do this and I have no clue so hopefully someone here can help.

There is a PSP with the 3.71 M33-2 firmware on it. The owner of the PSP wants to update to Firmware 5.00 but can't. When he tries he gets an error that says

PSP wrote:

The Memory Stick could not be read.
If you cancel, you may not be able to start the PSP system.
Check that the Memory Stick is correctly inserted, and then press the x
button.
(80010005)

That error appears when trying to run the update to 5.00 from two different memory cards. Could this be a hardware fault?

Is there any way of removing the 3.71 M33-2 firmware so the PSP can be put back to the original state?

Try and update the PSP to 3.71 M33-4 first, then format the Memory Stick and try updating again.

Still no joy unfortunately. But seeing as I could update to 3.71 M33-4 leads me to say not a hardware fault.

why not wait for cfw 5.00 m33, the psrdumps already been released so the cfw will be along shortly

Mmm they have disabled updating from CFW to OFW ages ago, something to do with the nand signing or some jargon. I think you might be able to do it with a pandoras battery but its probably a bit dangerous and there probably isnt OFW 5.00 on pandora/despar el cementario.

Best wait. What exactly is he hoping to achieve by updating? Is there some game that needs the new Firmware or is it for the PS store on PSP? If its the latter it might not work.

5.00 M33 is out now.
FYI, from 3.71 M33 onwards you can update from CFW to OFW without any problems. Its just as simple as downloading the EBOOT.PBP and running it.
3.80 M33 onwards introduced automatic CFW updating through "Network Update" function on the XMB.

Meh, i really cant see why anyone would want to go OFW. Although thats good to know Ongarite.

Other then that there is no m33 5.00 CFW and wont be for awhile

Incorrect my friend. I installed it on my PSP 2 hours ago and just helped Mossy Monk update 20 minutes ago.
