I've always been prone to the problem of shin splints. I have memories from about the age of 10, asking my dad why my shins were hurting so much. This was from just walking down the road to the shop. Since then I've experienced the same pain from time to time, most frequently when running on concrete. It's also been known to hit me mid-race in cross-country running.

What alarmed me this week is that I felt very accute pain while training for rugby on a very soft surface, the night after an intense football session. The pitch was practically quick-sand it was so muddy. This is in obvious contrast to concrete footpaths.

Have others experienced the same problem, and delt with it successfully? Should I consider a gait-test to see if specialist footwear is required? Or am I worried about nothing, and just over-working myself?

OP there's a number of threads in both Fitness and Athletics that deal with this topic, you might have some luck with an answer in these:

    Shin Splints 1
    Shin Splints 2
    Shin Splints 3
    Shin Splints 4

I have these myself from playing lots of rugby years ago. There is absolutly nothing that can be done to sort it, ive been to quite a few GP's and sports physio's over the years. Sometimes it acsts up after a few mins, other times it dosent happen at all.
