I've got a dell vostro 1500. Just did a fresh install of SUSE. Problems I'm having are regarding:

    1. Drivers: The system did an update, not sure if that was for SUSE or my hardware (I'm guessing SUSE?)

    2. Installing programs: Well SUSE has ALMOST everything I need. I wana install Audacity, a music editing software. I downloaded the rpm file to my desktop. When I clicked on it yast2 package manager popped up for a second and disapeared. So as ya do I wen't to google to fine the console command to install. I used

    cp /home/blah/Desktop/

    then

    rpm -ivh audacity-2.0-1.i386.rpm
    panda #################################### (100%) popped up.

Wahoo I though... Can't find the program on the hard disk at all. Just the install on the desktop. So I tried to run the install from package manager. I went file > import and selected the file but its only looking for an xml file.

Any help would be great. I'm an utter nube with linux but I'm trying :P

    Thanks!

*Also my net has gone dog slow since installing but I'd hasard a guess that it has something to do with drivers?*

**EDIT** Zangetsu 1 ::: SUSE 0! Figured out the install, its sad but thats a personal victory!

At the 'command line' type "man locate" or "man find" to read the manual entry for the "locate" and the "find" commands respectively,

Both are used for finding stuff.

After trying a few flavours I've settled on Fedora 9. Most of my hardware worked off the bat, only having issues with my mic and gpu... Internet browsing seems quite slow as well.

I have a nVidia 8600M GT: Is there anyway to enable 3D? I'm using the default driver for Fedora that doesn't support it.

Any idea how to get the mic working?

Any idea what could be causing my browsing to be slow?

Any help would be great... Thanks!

    Move to Ubuntu.

Didn't like ubuntu and all our servers in work are RH so Fedora is the best choice for me.

    Back on topic please....

you have to download the driver from nvidia dot com. its a big .run or .bin file you have to make it executable (chmod +x NVIDIAblahblah.run) and then run it from the command line in runlevel 3 i think. (init 2 or 3?)

internet browsing is slow for me when i use the eircom router's own DNS so i usually change it to eircom's own ones

My gfx card isn't listed on the nvidia site for some reason. No driver?

Also how do I go about changing my DNS? Do I have to set a static IP to do it?

    Thanks!

try the regular 8 series, or 8700m driver. i think they all link to the same package anyway...

you don't need a static IP you can edit /etc/resolv.conf directly but another app will over write those setts. the GUI based thing should work. i don't have a fedora install here to try out :(
