If you're thinking of buying from a store you'd probably benefit more price-wise if you buy from the apple.com/ie store with student discounts and aftersale care available etc.

The girl in Spectra said they have them today :D

Why are ye so keen to buy them?

Given Apple's track record the past few years, I would hold off until the next revision, unless you like dealing with Apple's frankly dreadful repairs procedures.

Macbook, MBP, macbook air - all have had a lot of problems in their first release versions.

This is sadly true. It's unfortunate that buyers of the first revision often end up being public beta testers. When I see what issues on my MacBook Pro have been fixed in later versions (mine was the first revision of the Core Duo line), it makes me seethe, but I didn't have a choice of waiting at the time (I had a couple of threads here about my adventures with my MacBook Pro's graphics card).

And when I can justify it in business terms, I'll certainly buy one of the new MacBook Pros, they look like great machines for the money. But I'd be wary of the very first releases, they've never been 100% solid out of the gate.

Yeah reluctantly I have to agree also, Apple have seem to gone hell for leather to try and compete price wise with pc's and in the process their hardware quality has suffered. I've seen 8 - 10 year old portables and desktops still running perfectly, nerr a problem encountered throughout the machines life.
The stuff from 2001 onwards though doesn't have the same level of reliability.
If it wasn't for their unrivaled operating system, Apple would have a hard time selling anything.

I think that is is the same with all computers these days.

I have plenty of old PC's with 386 and 486 processors running fine but todays equipment is asked to do more, more often.

CPU's running hotter, GPU's with more complex circuitry and motherboards with support for diverse hardware and attachments.

Lastly, the number of accessories has increased leading to problems with software and hardware quality control.

A fast car is not expected to last as long as a basic make.

So anyone experience one first hand today?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,575 Mod ✭✭✭✭dory

I looked over the shoulder of a lady looking at one in Spectra. Wanted to touch it for myself but the sales lady took the macbook and MBP away once she'd shown them to the woman who was interested.
I heard her saying "They're MUCH better than the old ones".
    Hmm....I don't think so. I'd miss firewire!

I can't get over how thin they are compared to the old macbook. I'd get one except I'd just miss firewire too much.

When could we expect the "next revision"?
I will buy one but perhaps might hold off because of this.
    Thanks

Yeah, I like how people have suggested holding off until the next revision. As the previous poster asked, I'd be curious at the length of time taken til we see the revised macbook. I have usually been given hand-me-down macs from my brother, so would be glad if my first purchase was trouble free!

I'd say it'll be at least 4/5 months before the next revision. Maybe longer, who knows.

I'm starting to reconcile myself to the lack of firewire. It's a loss but not the end of the world I guess. There's almost no chance of Apple backtracking in future updates so I'm not going to waste my time waiting. Gonna see what the hands on reviews are like and what if any issues arise.

Then how come an equivalent Windows computer is still vastly cheaper?
Had a play around with a previous generation MacBook and a Samsung Q310 back to back over the weekend.
The Mac felt like a piece of cheap plastic junk in comparison, and cost the same amount for laughable specification.

I bought a q310 recently, I have no complaints except maybe it could do with 2 more USB ports plus there's seemingly so few people out there with them. But I cannot understand why anyone would want to pay an extra €400 for an inferior machine. Damn you apple and your "lifestyle choice" marketing.

I got mine on laptopsdirect.ie in case anyone's interested. Very nice.
