File server reccommendations

    hi folks.
I got myself one of these a couple of months ago when they were selling for €170.

A friend of mine is now looking for something similar to use as a simple cheap file server. It wouldn't necessarily need a server chipset, just something with space/headers for a few hard drives,a half decent motherboard, and reasonable power consumption (ie not a 2nd hand Pentium 4!).

    Anybody got any ideas?

Any reason why he can't use a NAS?

    Get one of these:

    Slot in these:

And you've got a fault-tolerant, 0.5TB network file server for well under €200.

If he wanted to go nuts, he could slot in two of these,
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=343055

    And he's got 1TB for under €300.

It's a nice idea, but he's looking for a full blown x86 server, so he can run a P2P client and such.

Get a simple Matx motherboard with raid 1 from Abit or Gigabit for example. It's easier to find a cheaper am2 board with raid than a 775 board. But it's up to you really. P4 or a simple athlone would do the job just fine. And then pick what ever size hard drives you like.
