Will a vista home basic disc repair a vista home premium laptop?

My mates laptop is running vista home premium. Looks like it needs a repaired install as it will not boot up fully.

He lost his disk, would a vista home basic disc repair it for him? or would it be totally different for home premium.

Also I can get a command prompt up, and would prefer to first back up soem of his files to an external HD. But can I get a drive letter to appear? and what is the DOS command to copy from C: to whatever it appear as.

If an external will not boot up could I use a large usb key, or is there another way. I have ethernet crossover cable if that is any use.

As far as I know, but correct me if I'm wrong all Vista discs are the same its just the license key which determines which one you can select.

Im curious, if you used the home basic repair on a premium would it repair every file or leave some out due to different editions? Iv always wondered would they not clash in more ways then serial number. Same for XP.

Is there both 32 bit and 64bit versions on the same disk? I mean I've got a 64bit Ultimate version here, can I install the 32bit version with the same disk?

It was a Sony laptop and I put in a dell disk. It booted fine and I attempted a repair, it took about 15mins and then said it could not repair it. So back to my first post, is there a way to copy the files to a usb key or external HD? Or can you even copy to dvd from a command prompt? or other software.

Is there some other thing I should try. e.g. I could install another OS, but would that wipe C:

If it is a sony with vista go into the recovery partition where you can back up your data from.
To do this.Turn on the computer and keep pressing f10
Press enter when edit boot options comes up.
You will then have an option to rescue data do a full recovery or you can do a system restore

    Thanks, will give that a go. I had only tried F2, 8, & 12 I think.

All the Vista Dvd's contain the same OS. Its the product key that determins what version you get be it Home/Ultimate etc etc

Does this include OEM Dvds? The hard dive in my sisters Vista Home Basic laptop failed and I have a Home Premium OEM Dvd. As she has no idea where her set up disc is, could I use my disc with her product key to reinstall on her new hard drive?

The rescue data worked great, thanks a lot. It is a good feature, should be on all laptops.

Took over 36hrs to do it though! but got back around 99% of the files, and all the ones I really wanted to get. Have tried reinstalling vista now with no luck, gets errors on install.

I am thinking I will have to reformat the disk, but it could well be damaged, since found out his kid dropped the laptop.
